The Unmanned Mobile Acoustic Target (UMAT) group is based at the British Underwater Test & Evaluation Centre (BUTEC) and is seeking applicants with engineering experience to join their team at Kyle of Lochalsh, on the west coast of Scotland (approximately 4.5 hours' drive from Glasgow / Edinburgh). This Technician role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a challenging environment, exposing you to a wide range of technologies in a relatively short time.
UMAT is responsible for operating, maintaining, and supporting two classes of underwater acoustic vehicles: AMASS (Autonomous Mobile Acoustic Submarine Simulator) and SPAT (Self-Propelled Acoustic Target Mod 1), along with associated equipment. These underwater vehicles primarily serve to provide platforms for the Royal Navy to train, test, and certify submarines, staff, and equipment in real-time scenarios.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
1. The operation, maintenance, repair, and calibration of the AMASS underwater target and support equipment as directed.
2. Deployment and operation of autonomous vehicles and equipment at sea to support trials.
3. In-shop testing and calibration of ancillary equipment to ensure safety and compliance (e.g., PAT, LOLER).
4. Maintaining technical knowledge and competency for UMAT operations and maintenance.
5. Using group paperwork and entering data into the Equipment Database within an ISO9001:2000 environment.
This role is full-time, 37 hours per week, based at our Kyle of Lochalsh site.
