Safety Manager: Job Description and Person Specification
Advanced Arboriculture Ltd is a small but innovative arboricultural consultancy based near Exeter, Devon. We carry out a range of consultancy projects ranging from single tree safety inspections in private gardens to British Standard 5837 surveys of large commercial development or infrastructure projects. As part of the staged retirement of co‑founder, Graham Joyce, we are looking to employ a full‑time Safety Manager to take over and build on the existing safety portfolio. The successful candidate will work from our offices near Exeter and be responsible for managing the safety service we offer, including undertaking safety surveys, liaising with clients and subcontracting arboricultural consultants, and seeking new markets. The role will also involve occasional working alongside the other Advanced Arboriculture consultants to deliver our British Standard 5837 service. The suitable candidate will be responsible to and be mentored until summer 2027.
Key Responsibilities
* Take over the management of the existing safety service
* Review existing processes and templates to maintain customer‑focussed efficiencies
* Attend sites to carry out arboricultural surveys, gather and record accurate and specific data
* Prepare a range of reports including full site inventories, walkover surveys, detailed individual tree inspections, rooting distribution surveys, specialist decay detection investigations and climbing inspections
* Work towards producing mortgage reports and subsidence reports
* Use pre‑made templates to create high quality arboricultural commentary and recommendations
* Manage your own diary and workload of dynamic projects
* Liaise with clients, project professionals as required
* Liaise and negotiate with local authorities on Tree Preservation Order and Conservation Area applications for sites
* Willingness to attend networking events or similar to represent the Company and promote its activities
* Line‑manage external consultants and technicians as required
* Develop and apply quality assurance procedures for external consultants
* Assist with other consulting projects (BS5837, etc.) as required
* Assist in the expansion of the use of tree survey software for larger sites/projects
Skills / Qualifications / Capabilities
* Basic arboricultural qualification (L3 or above)
* Tree safety assessment experience / qualification (PTI)
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* High levels of attention to detail and a commitment to producing quality work
* Ability to multi‑task, maintaining input on multiple projects and tasks on an ongoing basis
* Competence and confidence in using Microsoft Office applications Word and Excel
* Openness and ability to learn quickly
* Team player with excellent collaboration skills
* Full driving licence
* Willingness to be flexible and adapt to the needs of clients and the business
* CSCS card holder
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of BS3998
* Have a good level of tree, fungi, and pathogen identification
* Have an eye for detail to critically review and proof‑read technical reports
* Higher level arboricultural qualification (L5 or above)
* Knowledge of or interest in arboriculture in a development context
* Knowledge of wider expectations and policy surrounding trees in a development context
* Experience of using decay detection devices (resistograph, tomograph, etc)
* Experience of specialist tree survey software (Pear, OTISS, Arbortrack, etc)
* Registered user of tree risk assessment system (QTRA or VALID)
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of BS5837 and BS8545
* Access to own car (mileage expenses covered) in the short term
* Experience of using tree diagnostic equipment such as Arborcheck
Work Location
* Primary location will be Axehayes Barn, Clyst St Mary, Exeter
* Travel to attend sites as required
* Overnight stays when required with an allowance to be paid to cover these, including agreed out of

* Salary £35,000 to £40,000 depending on experience and qualifications, to be reviewed 6 monthly in the first year then annually
* 40 hours per week based on a nominal 8 hour day with an unpaid half hour lunch break and day‑to‑day flexibility to suit domestic and working situations
