The successful candidate will be part of an enthusiastic team of physicians dedicated to providing high quality patient care at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford.
Same day internal Summary
We are looking for a consultant in General Medicine to deliver clinical care, supervision, and development across a range of subspecialties including Acute Medicine, SDEC, Frailty, Stroke, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Orthogeriatrics, Renal Medicine, and intensive care.
Main Duties
 * Provide clinically responsible, consultant‑level care for acute patients in the Acute Medical Unit, Advanced Medical Assessment Units, and ward settings.
 * Suspend acute admissions processes, ensuring safe and timely transfers to appropriate specialty wards.
 * Supervise registrar and specialty doctors – clinical oversight of day‑to‑day care, ward rounds, and clinical decision‑making.
 * Deliver clinical education and teaching for junior staff, including induction, ward‑round teaching, multidisciplinary meetings, and formal teaching sessions.
 * Participate in Haht (Hospital At Home Team) discharge facilitation and other community‑based care pathways.
 * Contribute to departmental and hospital clinical governance, including quality improvement initiatives and audit.
 * Engage in on‑call rota – 1 on‑call per week, including weekday, Friday, and weekend coverage, with responsibilities for the post‑take ward round and subsequent review.
Education & Training
 * Play an active role in the induction and training of new staff.
 * Support and develop teaching opportunities in General Medicine for doctors and other care providers within the hospital and community.
 * Provide informal teaching and multidisciplinary support during ward rounds, team meetings, and multidisciplinary conferences.
Qualifications
 * MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
 * Full and Specialist registration (and license to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
 * UK‑trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 3 months of CCT. Non‑UK trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
 * Desirable: MD, PhD or equivalent advanced qualification.
Clinical Skills
 * Extensive experience in GIM and SDEC.
 * Multidisciplinary team leadership at senior level.
 * Full independent responsibility for patient care at consultant level.
Desirable Clinical Skills
 * Demonstrated ability to manage common acute and chronic conditions, including emergencies.
 * Evidence of leadership and service innovation with NHS resources.
 * Effective multidisciplinary teamwork and leadership, supported by multi‑source feedback.
Personal Skills
 * Clear written and spoken communication, with adaptability to various audiences.
 * Analytical decision‑making, including problem solving and lateral thinking.
 * Leadership, organisation, and motivation of team members for quality improvement projects.
 * Ability to work under pressure, resilience, and initiative in uncertain clinical situations.

 * Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (Hospital medical and dental staff).
 * Contract: Permanent, Full‑time.
