Description The Service & Team The Sensory Support Service in Cornwall is a specialist, multi-disciplinary service supporting children and young people aged 0–25 with vision impairment, hearing impairment and multi-sensory impairment. The team includes Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVIs), Advisory Teachers of the Deaf (ATODs), HSALTs and specialist support staff. We work collaboratively with families, schools, early years settings, colleges and partner agencies across a wide range of mainstream and specialist settings throughout Cornwall. Children and young people are at the centre of everything we do. We support learners to access education, thrive, and achieve their potential, while empowering families and education settings to understand and meet sensory needs through inclusive, adaptive practice. The Role The post holder will work as an Advisory Teacher of the Vision Impaired, providing a high standard of specialist teaching, assessment, monitoring and advice to children and young people aged 0–25 with vision impairment. The role involves working across a range of schools and settings throughout Cornwall, building strong working relationships with families, education staff and wider professionals. The post holder will champion inclusive practice, promote resilience and aspiration, and support schools to develop effective whole‑setting approaches to sensory impairment. The role includes contributing to statutory SEN processes, delivering training, producing high‑quality reports, and working as part of multi‑disciplinary teams. This is a public‑facing role and the statutory English language requirement applies. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure. Working Pattern This is a full-time teaching role based in Truro, with the majority of work taking place across West Cornwall, although travel across the county is required. The role involves regular travel to schools, settings and family homes. Flexible working options will be considered in line with service need and council policy. What You’ll Need to Succeed Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Mandatory Qualification in Vision Impairment (QTVI) Teachers without this qualification but with relevant experience are encouraged to apply and will be required to complete the qualification (fully funded) Successful and recent teaching experience, ideally with children and young people with sensory impairment, including those with additional needs Strong skills in assessment, planning, monitoring and reviewing progress Ability to provide practical, solution‑focused advice to schools and settings Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and child‑centred practice Full driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle Please read the attached Role Profile for full details of this post.
