Older Adults Cancer Service Clinical Nurse Specialist

Along with the oncology consultant clinical lead, the post holder will lead the Older Adults Cancer Service (OACS), in partnership with multidisciplinary team (including physiotherapy, occupational therapist, dietician, speech and language therapist, pharmacist, consultant specialising in the care of the older adult and a secretary) in developing, implementing and evaluating a seamless specialist service ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care. The post holder will demonstrate a high level of expertise within the specialist service, providing specialist advice, education and support for health care professionals and patients. The post holder will actively undertake clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and research within the specialist service. The post holder will take on additional responsibilities at the Senior Nurse/Associate Director of Cancer request to ensure that the service runs smoothly and meets all key performance indicators. The post holder will develop a dedicated service and pathways for the Older Adult Cancer Service.

Main duties of the job

To work as a clinical nurse specialist in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team within a new Older Adult Cancer service at the Bart's cancer Centre.

To provide clinical leadership and expertise to the patients within the older adult cancer service, acting as a resource and expert to patients, staff and family.

To ensure all aspects of care are developed in a coordinated way.

To develop policies, processes and standard operating procedures (SOP) to develop the service throughout the Bart's Cancer Centre.

To support ward teams in delivering quality care to the older adult patients within the cancer ward areas, lead the care of patient within the ward area.

To promote the new service and embed the clinical services provided within the Cancer Centre.

Clinical: Patient care

Acting as role model and leading by example in all aspects of clinical care


Education and Development

Ensuring appropriate education and training of all members of the team and supporting professional development


Management and Leadership

Participate in selection recruitment, managing budgets, meeting key performance KPI participating in audit and QI projects.


Clinical Governance

Effective risk management, DATIX incidents and promote a culture of safe practice with openness and transparency.

Person Specification


Experience

* Experience in either working in a cancer role or frailty role as band 7 or above or both components of the role
* Experience in developing SOP and frameworks / treatment plans / policy development
* Experience working in a Clinical Nurse Specialist role
* Experience in setting up a new service / introducing a new service
* Experience in data collection, audit and research


Skills

* Experience in managing a team
* Able to demonstrate evidence of previous clinical leadership
* Evidence that able to apply Quality Improvement principles in practice
* Evidence of Advanced Communication Skills course / Training / interpersonal skill
* Demonstrate ability to work autonomously
* Ability to participate and coordinate MDT meetings
* Physical Assessment skills
* Understanding of Advanced Care Planning


Knowledge

* Expert Knowledge in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for Frailty
* Understanding of cancer treatments and common side effects and impact on patients
* Demonstrate understanding of co-morbidities and the impact on patients receiving anti‑cancer therapies.
* Understanding of palliative care / End of life care


Qualifications

* BSC Degree / Master's in Nursing
* Specialist course relevant to the post eg cancer or care of elderly specific or both
* BSC Degree / Master's in Nursing
* Physical Assessment
* Non‑medical Prescribing
* Possession of Systemic Anti‑cancer Treatment (SACT) course or experience of administration and side effects
