Infection Prevention and Control Nurse, Band 6 (30 hours a week)
We are looking to recruit a Band 6 Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Nurse who will work 30 hours a week and support the prevention and control of healthcare‑associated infection within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). The successful candidate will collaborate with the IPC team and other service partners to develop and implement IPC practice in line with Trust and national requirements.
Main duties
You will inspire and motivate others, act as a professional source of advice, and use evidence‑based IPC to innovate and improve safe service delivery. You will support staff to maintain high IPC standards, deliver IPC programmes, and optimise treatment of patients with infections.
Role duties include:
* Support patient ward rounds (e.g., nurse‑led C. difficile and AMS ward rounds)
* Administer novel CDI therapies such as faecal microbiota transplants
* Advise and support staff on IPC issues
* Complete IPC audits and surveillance and engage wards to support remedial actions
* Teach on study days and deliver and review educational packages when competent
* Attend and participate in division‑ and system‑wide meetings
* Engage in external IPC conferences and regional meetings
* Complete post‑infection reviews and manage outbreaks
* Lead and support quality improvement projects
* Work with key stakeholders (UKHSA, Occupational Health, NHS England) on system‑wide initiatives
* Engage in Trust‑wide shared decision making
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience – Essential
* Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
* Strong interest in infection prevention and control
* Understanding of research and evidence‑based practice
* Experience in report writing
* Flexibility to work across both hospitals in the Trust and at all levels of the organisation
* Ability to resolve problematic situations and deal with difficult people
* Strong communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Ability to develop effective working relationships with all disciplines across the Trust
* Problem‑solving and change‑management skills with the ability to influence others
* Experience in teaching, training and staff development
* Appropriate post‑registration experience
* Knowledge of IPC principles and basic microbiology
* Experience in engaging with or supporting IPC‑related programmes
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience – Desirable
* Confidence in IT (Excel, Word, databases)
* Understanding of ethics, UK law, code of practice and guidelines
* Knowledge of issues and legislation relating to infection prevention and control
* Experience in undertaking audit and its implementation
* Act as a role model for IPC practice
* Quality improvement (QI) training and experience of engaging in QI work, ideally within IPC‑related programmes
* Worked as an IPC link practitioner and/or IPC practitioner
