Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Nurse Specialist

Job Summary
Provide specialist nursing care to children and young people with cancer who attend day‑care for planned treatments such as chemotherapy, blood tests, transfusions, symptom management and follow‑up reviews. Work autonomously within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality, child‑ and family‑centred care, minimise disruption to family life, reduce hospital time and support seamless outpatient pathways.
Job Responsibilities
* Primary responsibility for specialist nursing care within the Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Service, practising autonomously as a core team member to deliver high‑quality, child‑ and family‑centred care in an outpatient and day‑care setting.
* Support the ambulatory care team to ensure safe and effective therapeutic management of a defined paediatric oncology caseload, facilitating efficient patient flow and same‑day treatment pathways.
* Act as the identified key worker for a designated patient caseload, coordinating and overseeing treatment, care planning, follow‑up and communication across inpatient, outpatient and community settings to ensure continuity of care.
* Provide specialist advice, education and emotional support to patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals within the Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Service and support the wider Division in developing and delivering safe, effective, and responsive ambulatory oncology services.
* Work across professional, departmental and Trust boundaries to develop and support seamless, patient‑centred ambulatory pathways, with a focus on reducing unnecessary inpatient admissions, improving patient experience, and leading nurse‑led initiatives within paediatric oncology ambulatory care.
* Act as a professional role model within the Paediatric Oncology Ambulatory Service, promoting excellence in clinical practice, supporting staff development and contributing to collaborative multidisciplinary and inter‑professional team working.
Essential Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
* Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register.
* Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at Level 6.
* Post‑registration qualification within the area of speciality or equivalent experience.
* Completion of all Band 5 preceptorship competencies.
* Evidence of supporting/managing a range of learners in practice.
* Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice.
* Extensive post‑registration experience within a specialist area.
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
* Understanding of personal accountability.
* Confident in own knowledge base, aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate.
* Able to critically review and communicate clinical information.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA competencies.
* Experience acting in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners.
* Counselling qualification.
* Palliative care course.
* IT training.
* Change Management, clinical practice development.
* Multidisciplinary team working.
* Interest in nurse‑led care.
* Organisational/strategic awareness.
* Clear understanding of professional accountability and autonomous practice components of the role.
