Chief of Service
This role, which is both challenging and exciting, requires an individual who is capable of leading and inspiring all staff (clinical and non-clinical) within their Directorate and who will command the confidence of the constituent Speciality Teams.
The Chief of Service is an innovative practitioner committed to improving the patient experience and driving up standards of patient care. This opportunity is open to all staff groups in the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The Chief of Service is accountable to the Chief Operating Officer and if clinical, professionally accountable to the Medical Director. The role will co-ordinate and harnesses the talent of their Directorate, including the Specialty Leads; Associate Director of Operations; Assistant Chief Nurse, senior nurses and managers; representatives from Human Resources, Finance, Information Service, Quality Improvement, Governance and Patient Safety leads who support the Directorate.
The Chief of Service leads the directorate in a triumvirate alongside the Director of Nursing and Associate Director of Operations, collectively they are responsible for the safe and effective running of the directorate with the chief of service being accountable (they are the directorate’s senior leadership team). In addition, the role manages the Deputy Chief of Service and Specialty Leads, all together they make the directorate management team.
It is expected that this role will be and therefore the postholder will need to review their commitments to identify adequate time for this senior management role. These clinical commitments will need to be discussed with colleagues to ensure there is no impact on the service provided. Funding will be made available to backfill clinical work relinquished.
The Chief of Service, working with the Directorate Management Team is responsible for; delivering the Trust Strategy, objectives and business plan within the Directorate.
The Chief of Service sets clear expectations and ensures the delivery of both corporate and directorate objectives. They will harness the skills and experience of the Directorate management team so that they are empowered to manage and deliver services on a day-to-day basis, thus enabling them to focus on the leadership and improvement agenda.

* Relevant Professional registration specialist registration with a Licence to Practice (obtained by designated start date where applicable)
* Degree / relevant professional qualification
* Management qualification at Masters level, or equivalent experience
