We are thrilled to announce a major contract win with Southern Water. The Technical Specialist role focuses on analyzing and solving complex drainage issues, providing technical support to operatives, and liaising with other departments and clients. This position also involves supervising work processes, ensuring health and safety compliance, and supporting operatives in their day-to-day duties. The role will oversee pollution tracing, enabling works, auditing, and competency checks to ensure activities are carried out to the highest standards.
Location: Tonbridge Depot (Tonbridge, Kent); travel to various sites. Job type: permanent, full-time. Hours: Monday to Friday, 45 hours, plus participation in the on-call rota. Salary: competitive, depending upon experience. Benefits include 21 days holiday (plus bank holidays), health cash plan, onsite parking, and auto-enrolment pension scheme. The role requires working flexible hours, weekends, and participation in an on-call rota. Full training, PPE, and use of company equipment will be provided.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert technical advice and support for drainage systems, resolving complex drainage-related issues.
* Advise operatives on day-to-day duties, offering practical and technical solutions to challenges encountered during work activities.
* Ensure effective diagnosis and resolution of drainage problems, working with internal teams to implement solutions.
Liaison and Coordination
* Liaise with the client’s operational team to ensure smooth communication and successful drainage task execution.
* Work with planners and schedulers to coordinate resources, tasks, and project timelines.
* Collaborate with internal teams to resolve drainage-related issues and align with project objectives.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
* Ensure all activities comply with health and safety regulations, including risk assessments and safe working practices.
* Perform pollution tracing to identify environmental risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
* Conduct audits and compliance checks to meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Supervision of Work Processes
* Supervise and monitor drainage-related work processes, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to high quality standards.
* Guide operatives on-site with the right equipment, materials, and technical guidance.
* Ensure operatives follow proper procedures and work safely and compliantly.
Competency Checks and Staff Development
* Assess the competency of new starters to ensure they meet required technical skills before starting drainage tasks.
* Provide ongoing training to operatives on latest techniques, regulations, and best practices.
* Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and identify development areas.
Pollution Tracing and Environmental Management
* Lead pollution tracing to identify contamination sources and mitigate environmental impact.
* Collaborate with environmental teams to ensure drainage activities align with environmental guidelines.
* Oversee enabling works for drainage projects, ensuring safety and environmental standards are met.
Reporting and Documentation
* Maintain detailed records of technical assessments, pollution tracing, compliance checks, and work performed.
* Prepare technical reports for clients and internal teams with insights and recommendations.
* Ensure documentation meets company procedures and industry standards.
Continuous Improvement and Best Practices
* Stay up to date with drainage and construction trends and best practices.
* Contribute to process improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and compliance.
* Share technical knowledge across teams to develop best practices within the organisation.
* Adhere to all Lanes Group policies and responsibilities towards them.

About You
The ideal candidate will have operational expertise (including budgeting and forecasting) and strong negotiation, relationship management, and stakeholder engagement skills. Strategic thinking, a data-driven approach to decision making, and the ability to multitask and prioritise are important. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong attention to detail are essential. Adaptability and flexibility are key.
