Principal Development Management Officer – Major Applications
(Hybrid | Initial 3-Month Contract)
We are currently seeking an experienced Principal Development Management Officer to join a forward-thinking local authority within a dynamic Economy and Growth division.
This is a senior-level opportunity for a planning professional who can lead on complex, high-profile planning applications and play a key role in delivering sustainable growth aligned with strategic development plans.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the assessment and determination of major and complex planning applications
* Provide expert planning advice across a wide range of areas including residential, commercial, infrastructure, and environmental developments
* Support and guide the Development Management team to ensure effective service delivery
* Represent the authority at public inquiries, hearings, and planning committees
* Engage with developers, stakeholders, and the wider community to support planning outcomes
* Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and planning decisions
* Contribute to the delivery of local plans and strategic growth objectives
Key Requirements:
* Degree (or equivalent) in Town Planning or a related discipline
* Membership of (or eligibility for) the RTPI
* Strong experience within a Local Authority Development Management team
* In-depth knowledge of planning legislation, policies, and procedures
* Proven experience handling major and complex applications
* Strong report writing, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
* Ability to lead, mentor, and influence others effectively
Working Arrangement:
* Hybrid working (office, home, and site visits)
* Flexibility required, including occasional work outside normal hours
* Significant involvement in site visits and stakeholder meetings
