This job title and description is an outline of the principal areas of responsibility and may be subject to periodic change. These duties are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be called upon to adapt to and undertake different or new appropriate duties as may be required in line with professional and service developments, within the grading level of the post and the competence of the post holder. Prior to any variations to your job description consultation will take place in line with the Trust's policies and procedures.


Responsibilities

* To provide occupational therapy service to service users who have a variety of occupational therapy needs, diverse presentations and a range of mental health conditions, cognitive and/or learning disabilities under the direction of a more experienced member of Occupational Therapy staff.
* To manage and provide ongoing assessment and intervention for service users.
* To consider carer needs and ensure carer and family are involved in intervention planning where appropriate.
* To develop and deliver evidence based Occupational Therapy interventions in collaboration with service users and carers where appropriate.
* To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team ensuring that high quality, individualised care is delivered which ensures safety and a commitment to promoting recovery and wellbeing and maximising independence.
* To provide compassionate care that is based on empathy, kindness, respect and dignity.
* To provide clinical supervision to staff members as delegated by Clinical Lead.
* To incorporate a client centred philosophy into clinical practice and client centred collaborative care.


Communication & Relationships

* Work collaboratively with colleagues directly involved in the delivery of Occupational Therapy, both in the community and hospital in-patient settings, and will develop good working relationships and networks with other community resources and providers both statutory and non-statutory.
* Communicate clinical assessments and interventions to service users and carers in an understanding manner promoting wellbeing which inspires hope to the service user and carer.
* Demonstrate the ability to overcome barriers to communication, supporting Service User's understanding by adapting the approach used (e.g. use of Interpreters where English is not a first language, alternative and augmentative communication methods), to ensure that they can access and engage effectively with services.
* Develop interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain therapeutic partnerships with Service Users and Carers in the delivery of Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions.
* Develop negotiating, empathetic and motivational skills to manage situations where complex and highly sensitive material/information is being discussed, ensuring professionalism is maintained.
* Undertake assessment, intervention and evaluation of Service Users presenting with a variety of complex occupational therapy needs, and diverse presentations and with a range of mental health conditions, neurological conditions, cognitive and/or learning disabilities.
* Develop the ability to exercise clinical and professional judgement which may be in conflict with other professions or the service user.
* Make a judgement on whether clients have the capacity to give informed consent and seek additional advice and expertise when necessary.
* Advocate on behalf of the service users and carers to ensure that Trust and Local Authority statutory responsibilities are being met.
* Demonstrate clinical reasoning when selecting appropriate Treatments/Interventions, taking into consideration the Service User's clinical presentation, risk issues, vulnerability, and willingness to engage in services and Interventions.
* Reflect and critically appraise own performance, knowing when to seek advice and support from more experienced clinicians.
* Assess and manage risks to service users and others, who present with complex and significant risks, involving possible harm to self or others.
* Formulate appropriate interventions and Risk/Safety Planning. To utilize the support of colleagues, other Services or Team Manager as required.
* Understand and apply policies and procedures which ensure that the Trust and Local Authority statutory responsibilities are being met.


Planning and Organisational Skills

* Manage a caseload of service users, following a comprehensive assessment under supervision.
* Manage own time within the requirements of the service and priorities. Prioritise caseload and workload effectively with support and supervision.
* Facilitate timely goals and interventions with service users, utilising evidence based interventions.
* Meet deadlines for reports in accordance with statutory requirements and provide timely professional reports as requested by Multi-Disciplinary Team members and clinical/line managers.


Essential Requirements

* Ability to act as part of a team.
* Ability to cope with a varying workload.
* IELTS (7.5 with 7.0 in each module) – or OET Exam Grade ‘B’ overall for Overseas AHP Professionals.
* HCPC Registration Required (Health & Care Professionals Council).
* Be HCPC Registered Occupational Therapist.
* Degree in relevant Occupational Therapy qualification.
* Have a nationally recognised professional Occupational Therapy qualification.
* Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain therapeutic partnerships with service users and carers and via supervision from the Clinical Lead and Clinical Supervisor.
* Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
* Deliver evidence based Occupational Therapy interventions.
* Develop assessment skills and contribute to multi-disciplinary discussion to determine ongoing needs and treatment planning.
