What you will do
As a Routing Technical Officer, you'll sit at the heart of how we translate customer needs into real, deliverable steel products. You'll be the link between order entry, technical standards and the manufacturing routes that turn Hot Rolled Coil into high‑performing packaging steels.
In this role, you will:
* Translate customer specifications into accurate product and HRC requirements.
* Manage and update the automated routing system, ensuring it reflects customer needs and site capability.
* Advise commercial teams on both technical and dimensional manufacturing capabilities.
* Support projects including supply chain transformation, mainframe developments and cross‑site trials with our Netherlands and Llanwern teams.
* Maintain and update the master works capability document to prevent unfeasible orders entering production.
* Ensure qualification trials are correctly routed and monitored.
* Carry out investigations, data analysis and produce clear technical documentation where required.
* Work closely with manufacturing, logistics, product management and order entry teams to ensure smooth transfer of orders through the business.
* Uphold safe working practices in line with Tata Steel policies.
It's a role for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, technical detail and being a central point of knowledge across multiple departments.
What you will need
We're looking for someone who brings a mix of technical expertise, strong analytical skills and the confidence to collaborate across the business. You'll ideally have:
* HNC-level qualification in Chemistry, Metallurgy or a related field.
* Strong understanding of steel manufacturing processes – from casting right through to finished product.
* Experience with computer-based routing systems and mainframe environments.
* Knowledge of order entry, routing interfaces and quality management systems.
* Confident data skills, including databases, spreadsheets, Power Bi or similar tools.
* Ability to create clear technical documents for QMS use.
* Strong problem‑solving capability, with the ability to understand and translate cross‑departmental issues.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – you'll be working with technical teams, product managers, supply chain and auditors.
* Flexibility to travel occasionally within the business when required.
* A proactive, organised approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team.
