Responsibilities

* The post holder will provide support to women and birthing persons on the maternity ward, involving antenatal and postnatal care.
* Support and assist the Midwife/Nurse in delivering culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgemental patient care.
* Participate in fundamental care activities: personal hygiene, toileting, moving and handling, meal service and feeding, and specimen collection.
* Work in accordance with the Trust’s protocols and guidelines, recognising the patient as the centre of the healthcare system.
* Provide support with infant feeding, venepuncture and neonatal blood tests, VIP care, and removal of catheters.
* Record vital signs for both adults and neonates and complete Band 2/3 competencies in a timely fashion.
* Attend mandatory training and undertake daily bed rounds; respond to call bells.
* Undertake opportunities to study for relevant NVQ Level 3 awards.
* Work in a rotational capacity with appropriate training for antenatal inpatient/outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care, and postnatal inpatient/outpatient care.


Role Details

The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide safe, holistic, women-centred care. The midwife remains responsible for the mother and her newborns, and the MSW provides clinical care under direct or indirect supervision after completing relevant training. The role is rotational and includes training for the clinical settings in which the MSW works.


Qualifications

* Basic literacy, Care certificate, Current HCA/MCA
* Desirable criteria: Infant feeding experience
* Experience using the Trust’s computer systems
