Base pay range

Are you an experienced health, safety and environmental professional ready to make a meaningful impact across Scotland by promoting safe, sustainable, and compliant working environments? The Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor role sits within Food Standards Scotland’s Corporate Services division, as part of the Health, Safety, Administration, Facilities and Environment (HSAFE) Business Unit. Reporting directly to the HSE Manager, this post currently carries no direct line management or budgetary responsibilities. In this role, you will support FSS’s health and safety, environmental, and sustainability agendas by monitoring compliance, providing advice to staff and the wider organisation, and contributing to the ongoing development of a positive safety and sustainability culture. You will carry out site visits across Scotland where FSS staff operate, undertaking audits, inspections, incident investigations. The role also involves supporting the maintenance and continual improvement of FSS’s Safety Management Systems, including supporting the online training platform, display screen equipment assessments and support occupational health cases. You will contribute to FSS' Public Body duties for climate reporting and its sustainability plans.


Responsibilities

* Deliver on the HSE functions of the HSAFE Business Unit.
* Contribute to FSS’ sustainability and environmental agenda, including processing of carbon emissions data.
* HSE site visits, investigations and audits. This will include locations across Scotland where FSS’ field operational staff work which are poorly served by public transport. These are predominantly abattoirs and may also include farms, or other remote locations. Occasional overnight visits may be required.
* Build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships both internally and externally.
* The continual review and update of FSS’ Health, Safety and Environmental Management system.
* Supporting staff with written procedures, risk and COSHH assessments.
* Review and advise on applicable legislation.
* Report writing.
* Accurate data input.
* Along with Human Resources, assist with health and wellbeing case management.
* Any other duties which may be associated with the job function.


Qualifications

Minimum of a NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.

A valid driving licence (automatic or full).


Success profile

Success profiles are specific to each job and they include the mix of skills, experience and behaviours candidates will be assessed on.


Experience

* Experience working as a Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor, or at a more senior level, with a strong background in incident investigations, auditing, and continual improvement of management system documentation.
* Experience of driving environmental and sustainability agendas.
* Ability to interpret complex information and write accurately and concisely in a technical manner.


Behaviours

* Managing a quality service - Level 3

Working Pattern

Our standard hours are 35 hours per week, this role is full-time and includes flexible working arrangements.

Security Checks

Successful candidates must complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), before they can be appointed. BPSS is comprised of four main pre-employment checks – Identity, Right to work, Employment History and a Criminal Record check (unspent convictions).
