English and Maths Tutor Salary: £25 - £35 per hour Job Description This role involves delivering personalised tuition in English and Mathematics to learners of varying ages and abilities. The tutor provides support to improve learners’ understanding, skills, and confidence in these core subjects. The position requires adapting teaching methods to meet individual learning needs, assessing progress regularly, and maintaining accurate records. The role contributes to the overall educational development of learners and supports their achievement of set goals. Key Duties and Responsibilities Plan and deliver engaging and effective tuition sessions in English and/or Mathematics tailored to individual learner requirements. Assess learners’ current abilities and identify areas for improvement through diagnostic assessments and ongoing evaluation. Develop and implement personalised learning plans to support learners’ progression and attainment targets. Use a variety of teaching resources and techniques to enhance learning and maintain learner motivation. Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to learners to build confidence and promote independent learning. Monitor and record learner progress, preparing reports as required for educational stakeholders. Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment at all times. Communicate effectively with learners and, where appropriate, with parents or guardians regarding progress and development. Stay informed about current educational best practises, curriculum changes, and examination requirements relevant to English and Mathematics. Required Qualifications A recognised qualification in English and/or Mathematics at Level 3 or above (such as A-levels, Level 3 Certificate, or equivalent). Formal teaching or tutoring qualification is desirable but not essential. Education Minimum of GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above in English and Mathematics. Further qualifications in education, teaching, or relevant subject areas are advantageous. Experience Previous experience tutoring or teaching English and/or Mathematics to learners of various ages and abilities. Experience working within education or training environments is preferred. Proven ability to adapt teaching styles to accommodate different learning needs. Knowledge and Skills Strong subject knowledge in English grammar, literature, comprehension, and mathematical concepts appropriate for the learner’s level. Ability to assess learning needs and design suitable learning activities accordingly. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage learners effectively. Patience, empathy, and the ability to motivate and encourage learners to achieve their potential. Good organisational skills to manage lesson planning, progress tracking, and administrative tasks. Competence in using digital tools and resources to support teaching and learning. Preferred Qualifications Teaching qualifications such as a PGCE, CertTESOL, or Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. Experience working with learners preparing for GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications. Knowledge of national curriculum requirements and examination board specifications. Working Conditions The role is temporary and part-time, offering flexible working hours to accommodate learner availability. Work may take place in various settings including learners’ homes, community centres, or online platforms. The tutor must be able to travel within Buckinghamshire and the wider South East region as required. The role requires adherence to safeguarding and health and safety policies at all times. Occasional evening or weekend sessions may be necessary depending on learner needs. All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role.
