Position Overview
As a Dental Nurse Apprentice, you will provide a key role in supporting our dentists to deliver high-quality care to our patients. You will give calm reassurance to anxious patients by demonstrating excellent people skills and attention to detail. This apprenticeship covers all aspects of clinical responsibilities and duties of a dental nurse and will support you to achieve the City & Guilds Level 3 Dental Nursing Practitioner (Diploma) qualification and apply for professional registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a Dental Care Professional. IMPORTANT
Responsibilities
* Complete Level 3 Dental Nursing Practitioner (Diploma) coursework and units by the specified deadlines.
* Adhere to the General Dental Council's Student Fitness to Practise guidance and maintain professional behaviour.
* Maintain a high standard of patient care and professionalism.
* Assist clinicians and staff with materials and in all aspects of dentistry, subject to ability and knowledge.
* Receive training in all clinical departments.
* Communicate with Senior Dental Nurses/Dental Nurse Managers while on secondment to departments or clinics.
* Follow statutory employment procedures and relevant Trust policies, including safety and Infection Prevention Control procedures.
* Prepare dental equipment and clean specialist units to meet Infection Prevention Control policies and procedures.
* Attend lectures, examinations and training commitments as required to meet learning outcomes.
* Complete clinical rotations, including work experience.
* Undertake other duties commensurate with this grade of post, in agreement with the line manager.
* Minimise the Trust’s environmental impact wherever possible, including recycling, reducing printing and copying, conserving water, reporting faults promptly and minimising travel.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Maths GCSE Level 4 / Grade C or equivalent.
* English GCSE Level 4 / Grade C or equivalent.
* One additional GCSE Level 4 / Grade C (preferably in a science-based subject).
* Excellent communication skills, professionalism and a self‑motivation to learn while earning on a salaried course.
* Knowledge of the roles of a dental nurse and a keen interest in working in healthcare.
* Commitment to completing the City & Guilds Level 3 Dental Nursing Practitioner (Diploma) throughout the apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship Details
The apprenticeship will commence in September 2026 at the Birmingham Dental Hospital in Edgbaston, one of the country’s leading centres of dental training and research. You will experience all disciplines of dentistry and receive onsite support through formal lectures, one‑to‑one tutorials and specialized placement opportunities across the West Midlands. The course is salaried and will be completed while you learn.
