About the Role

We are looking for a Publishing and Content Engineering Manager to be responsible for managing a team of specialists addressing the establishment, governance, and maintenance of publishing and content data validation and transformation capabilities across the company. This spans ensuring that data capture, integrations and outputs in appropriate formats can be implemented with the appropriate quality and functional standards.

Key responsibilities in this role will include:

1. Manage and lead a team of digital publishing experts, maintaining an inclusive environment, providing appropriate guidance and development opportunities, and recruiting where appropriate to ensure a skilled, diverse, and motivated team.
2. Collaborate with the Senior Content Data Architect and Data Architecture teams to provide guidance on data capture and preparation
3. Have governance over the conversion, validation, and quality control of XML data structures, digital content files, and associated materials.
4. Oversee implementation by team members of new instructions with content data suppliers, including provision of clearly stated requirements, training, and guidance; work with actors in the production and delivery workflows to analyse and resolve problems with capture and surface gaps in data models or rules to the Data Architecture team. Maintain relationships with managers across Publishing & Content Operations to facilitate new product development and process improvement initiatives.
5. Support cost-effective solutions for processes and efficient tools that facilitate XML/digital production and delivery for all product outputs, including consideration of timing and quality; develop processes and solutions to provide quality assurance checks on digital files and metadata.
6. Oversee the creation of transformation scripts to convert source data into OUP standard data structures meeting agreed data quality standards for publishing and licensing; ensuring appropriate technical specifications, automated validation and quality assurance processes are in place for specific projects or general processes.
7. Keep abreast of new products, technologies, standards, and business developments.
8. Provide technical guidance for structured authoring to facilitate the development and production of XML-based content across divisional products.
9. Provide technical guidance and consultancy across digital publishing and content capabilities, data modelling impacts, solutions, and strategy for internal, external (e.g., clients), and supplier stakeholders.
10. Triage and resolve escalated issues arising during the implementation or release of new publishing and content data related functionality (as an escalation point), whether print, ePubs, or online display/functionality; propose appropriate solutions in collaboration with Data Architects.
11. Oversee roll-out of updated reference data when provided by Data Architects (taxonomies, ontologies, semantic classifications)

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have/be:

Essential:

12. Experience of direct or matrix management of expert technical, publishing, or production teams.
13. Experience of XML formats and related technologies (such as XSLT, XPath, Unicode, XSpec, Schematron, RDF, DITA, ONIX).
14. Demonstrable knowledge of programming languages (e.g. JavaScript, Python, PHP).
15. Able to accurately evaluate functional and presentational content and publishing data requirements
16. Able to effectively assess and resolve content and publishing data errors, identifying and addressing root causes
17. Quick-to-learn, tech-savvy, and possess exceptional problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
18. Ability to lead and influence stakeholders while working independently on strategic and tactical projects.
19. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, communication and time-management abilities.
20. Experience working with digital content and products across academic and/or educational publishing.

Desirable:

21. Understanding of the software lifecycle (e.g., Agile and DevOps methodologies) and associated tools.
22. Knowledge of content and publishing data management systems and methodologies.
23. Experience with managing creation of digital content and publishing data transformation scripts and capture instructions with various levels of complexity.
24. Knowledge/experience of automated semantic classification and reference data solutions including AI, data mining, and knowledge engineering tools and processes
