Job Summary
Would you like a stimulating and challenging critical care job in an attractive, well‑connected part of England? We are looking for a Locum Intensive Care Medicine Consultant to join us on a 12‑month fixed term contract at our 560‑bed modern district general hospital in North Wiltshire, Swindon. The role offers opportunities to grow through an in‑house cross‑specialty quality improvement programme (Network and Navigate) and a clinical leadership course linked to Keele University (HELM).
Clinical Duties
* Multidisciplinary team working – regular MDT discussions with colleagues.
* Providing evidence‑based care for patients within a multidisciplinary setting.
* Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support).
* Development of subspecialty interests that fit in with division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
* Teaching, examination and accreditation duties, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education activities.
* Provision of cover for consultant colleagues during leave in accordance with Trust policy.
* Participation in clinical audit and continuing medical education.
* Conductive duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
* Participation in an out‑of‑hours consultant rota, detailed in the job plan section.
Management & Leadership Responsibilities
* Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
* Contribute to the leadership and development of services under the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, in line with Trust business plans.
* Ensure effective communication and staff involvement across the division, including support to the Divisional Director.
* Work in partnership with colleagues in other divisions within the Trust.
* Assist in cost‑effective utilisation of resources, including pay and non‑pay items, within budgets.
* Work within the Trust’s framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, developing clinical policies and adhering to standing orders and financial procedures.
* Undertake direct supervision of junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust‑wide teaching programmes.
* Conduct investigations and report writing for incidents, and participate in clinical risk management.
* Embodiment of STAR values and use of NHS Constitution principles to guide decisions.
Person Specification – Essential Qualifications
* GMC registration.
* Completion of CCT (or equivalent for non‑UK applicants) and being on the GMC Specialist Register in the appropriate specialty at the time of appointment. Alternatively within 6 months of CCT at interview.
* ATLS/APLS/ALS qualification.
Person Specification – Desirable Qualifications
* FFICM (UK) or equivalent for non‑UK residents.
Person Specification – Essential Clinical Experience
* Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT.
* Expert clinical opinion on a range of critical care medicine problems.
* Leadership of a multi‑professional team with full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Person Specification – Management & Administration
* Demonstrable multi‑disciplinary team leadership skills.
* Experience of audit and management.
* Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
Person Specification – Teaching & Research
* Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multidisciplinary teams.
