Full Job Description
Michie Group is looking to appoint a Town Planner to join our Planning Team based in Alnwick, Northumberland.
The role involves providing high quality, practical and proportionate planning advice to clients across a wide range of development projects. You will support clients from initial appraisal through to planning determination and, where necessary, appeal.
This is an opportunity to work across a broad and varied portfolio of projects, taking on genuine responsibility with direct client exposure, within a commercially focused private practice environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Preparing, submitting and managing planning applications, pre application enquiries and appeals
* Drafting Planning Statements, Design and Access Statements, supporting reports and professional correspondence
* Providing clear, pragmatic and commercially aware planning advice to clients and internal colleagues
* Liaising effectively with local planning authorities, statutory consultees, external consultants and stakeholders
* Attending site visits, client meetings and officer meetings as required
* Assisting with planning appraisals, site feasibility work and early stage development advice
* Supporting senior colleagues on larger, more complex or strategic projects
* Managing a caseload of projects, prioritising workloads and meeting agreed deadlines
* Monitoring and responding to changes in planning policy, legislation and local plan frameworks
* Maintaining accurate project records and assisting with fee management where appropriate
Scope of Work
The role will involve work across a broad range of project types, including:
* Rural and agricultural development
* Residential development including bespoke and rural housing
* Leisure, tourism and rural diversification schemes
* Commercial and estate related development
* Permitted development rights and prior approval matters
* Planning appraisals, enforcement related advice and appeal work
Level of Responsibility
Depending on experience, the role will involve:
* Managing projects independently with appropriate supervision; and or
* Supporting senior colleagues on more complex or strategic commissions
There is genuine scope for increased responsibility as experience and confidence develop.

The role will report to:
* Craig Ross, Partner and Chartered Town Planner
* Steph Linnell, Chartered Town Planner
About You
* Degree in Town Planning or a related discipline
* Experience within a Local Planning Authority or planning consultancy
* Strong understanding of the UK planning system and decision making process
* Ability to produce clear, well structured written work
* Organised, proactive and capable of managing multiple live projects
* Practical, problem solving approach to planning
* Working towards RTPI accreditation or already qualified
* Full UK driving licence
