Working Style: Hybrid - 50% from home / 50% office based
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join our Chief Operation Office function at Royal London. You’ll join the team responsible for technology strategy, architecture, delivery and support across key business and technical capabilities, providing shared services that enable the organisation’s strategy, change and operational goals.
Royal London is evolving its operating model so Technology and Change teams align to business value streams and enabling platforms. Building on core services such as infrastructure and security, we’re expanding the platform services we provide to value streams to help teams deliver change faster and more efficiently. This shift will create more reusable, componentised services and clearer end-to-end ownership. We’re looking for senior technology leaders who can shape platform strategy, translate it into pragmatic architectural roadmaps, and lead engineering and delivery teams to execute successfully. Working across teams, you’ll take ownership for delivery within your domain and act as an escalation point for complex issues. You’ll focus on practical problem-solving and removing delivery barriers, helping teams progress work safely and effectively.
What you will bring to the role:
* Significant experience in business relationship management in an IT environment (ideally within Life and Pensions or another regulated sector)
* Strong technical expertise with a clear understanding of architecture and engineering best practice, including designing modern, composable, cost-effective and performant solutions
* Ability to set clear direction, build alignment and enable cross-functional teams to deliver outcomes within your domain
* Proven experience partnering with business and technology stakeholders to translate business and customer outcomes into technology strategy, roadmaps and delivery plans
* Senior technology leadership experience within your domain, with a track record of delivering outcomes that support business goals
* Experience delivering successfully using agile, hybrid and waterfall approaches, with a focus on customer-led outcomes
* Ability to think strategically and apply innovation to improve platform and service outcomes
* Demonstrated experience improving services and delivery, using feedback and data to drive continuous improvement
* Commercial awareness and financial literacy, including budget ownership and cost management
* Clear communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
* People leadership experience, including coaching, capability development and enabling teams to deliver high-quality outcomes in an inclusive environment
* Ability to build trusted stakeholder relationships and communicate complex technology concepts clearly to senior, non-technical audiences
* Values diversity and difference, operates with integrity and openness
If you think you would be a great fit for our team at Royal London but don’t meet all the requirements of the role, please get in touch as your application will still be considered. We know that some people are less likely to apply unless they meet every requirement. If this role excites you and you can meet most of what we’re looking for, we’d love to hear from you.
