Principal Electrical Engineer – Rolling Stock Derby, UK We’re supporting a well-established rail engineering consultancy to appoint an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to work across a diverse portfolio of passenger, freight, metro, and light rail rolling stock projects. This is a technically senior role offering real ownership across the full project lifecycle — from feasibility and design through to integration, assurance, testing, and entry into service — with exposure to major operators, ROSCOs, OEMs, and public bodies. The role You’ll lead the delivery of electrical and electronic engineering solutions, providing high-quality consultancy while ensuring compliance with UK and EU railway standards. Key elements include: Electrical systems integration and vehicle modification projects Train control and protection systems upgrades Production and approval of design packs, schematics, calculations, and test documentation Leading verification & validation, static/dynamic testing, and readiness for service Assurance against standards such as TSIs / NTSNs and EN 50126 (Functional Safety) Mentoring engineers and leading technical work packages Supporting bids, estimating, and customer engagement What we’re looking for Strong electrical engineering background with rolling stock experience Proven delivery of electrical systems integration and vehicle modifications Solid understanding of railway standards, approvals, and assurance processes Experience working across multi-disciplinary engineering projects Confident communicator with the ability to engage customers and stakeholders Desirable: Chartered Engineer (or working towards) Experience with TCMS, diagnostics, condition monitoring, or cybersecurity awareness Exposure to bidding, estimating, or early-stage project work Why consider this opportunity?
