We are seeking a trainee Biomedical Scientist who holds or is working towards an IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree or equivalent (must have approved degree assessment from IBMS). This is an opportunity to join us working in our new purpose built and state of the art hospital with views across the countryside, in the Blood Science laboratory as a Biomedical Scientist. Candidates will be enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated and innovative, with good organisational skills and well developed communication skills. The Blood Sciences section provides a clinical laboratory service to NHS Dumfries & Galloway 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Dumfries & Galloway has a population of 150,000 people with approximately 300,000 samples analysed annually in Biochemistry 230,000 samples in Haematology and 17,000 samples in Blood Transfusion. The laboratory holds UKAS ISO15189 accreditation and is compliant with BSQR. You will rotate in all areas of the laboratory including Biochemistry Automation, Biochemistry Manual, Haematology Automation (FBC and Coagulation), Special Investigations, Morphology and Blood Transfusion. The department utilizes a wide range of analytical equipment, of which you will be required to become proficient in after suitable training, following Departmental SOPs. Applications are welcomed from individuals who are working towards or completed an IBMS accredited degree or equivalent in Biomedical Science. Note that in cases where the individual is completing top up modules, they must have their original degree assessed by the IBMS. If successful, candidates working towards the degree or equivalent will begin departmental training in the department and working towards completion of the IBMS Certificate of Competence. During the period of training, Band 5 Annex U will be applied to the post where the successful candidate will be paid 75% percentage of the fully qualified rate (of pay band maximum) until completion of their degree. Individuals who have completed the IBMS accredited degree or equivalent will be paid at Band 5 during their training period where they will work to complete the IBMS Certificate of Competence. On completion of the Certificate of Competence, the individual will be required to complete their Specialist Portfolio in post prior to progression to Band 6. During the period of training, Annex 21 will be applied to post, where the successful candidate will be paid a percentage of the fully qualified rate as follows: Year 1: 65% of the pay band maximum; Year 2: 70% of the pay band maximum; Year 3: 75% of the pay band maximum. This post will require the successful applicant to obtain Standard Disclosure Clearance.
