THE ROLE_ The Head of Data is a strategic leader, responsible for defining and delivering the data strategy for the Talon group. This role ensures that our data capabilities directly support the organisation’s commercial and growth objectives, providing the insight and governance needed to make informed decisions and create long-term value. You will unify fragmented sources, build trusted, decision-ready data products, and set the roadmap for how data underpins planning, trading, finance, and client outcomes. Alongside leading a multi-disciplinary team, you’ll remain hands-on in data science to accelerate delivery and demonstrate the art of the possible. Success looks like : a clearly executed group data strategy aligned to Talon’s commercial goals; stable, governed data pipelines and SLAs; executive-ready reporting that surfaces global and regional trends; a defensible audience-to-POI methodology for OOH planning; and platform configuration data that reliably supports our planning, buying, and technology platforms. A DAY IN THE LIFE_ Own the data strategy & roadmap : define the target architecture, data products, and governance that directly enable Talon’s strategic commercial goals across planning, trading, finance, and client delivery. Audience data leadership : govern how audience data is sourced, contracted, integrated, and applied; establish a robust, privacy-safe method to match audiences to inventory with POI context; standardise segments and measurement frameworks for effectiveness that feed into Talon’s competitive differentiation and client value. Platform configuration data : own, with their team, schemas, reference data, mappings, and feature flags for internal platforms; implement change control, lineage, data contracts, SLAs, and observability to ensure platforms remain commercially effective and scalable. Hands-on data science (initially 30–40%): prototype models (forecasting, optimisation, reach/footfall/brand-lift methods), validate methods, and mentor the team with an emphasis on applications that support commercial planning and growth. Leadership & collaboration : set standards for engineering, BI, and analytics; partner closely with Finance, Commercial, Planning, and Legal/Privacy to ensure Talon’s data delivers measurable commercial impact while remaining auditable and compliant. Commercial data management : work with Finance and Commercial teams to deliver a single, trusted view of revenue, cost, and margin; produce multi-year trend analysis; surface global vs regional performance; and identify opportunities where data unlocks commercial growth. Prioritise the data roadmap against business goals; translate initiatives into deliverable sprints with clear acceptance criteria. Review data product health (SLAs, freshness, quality), resolve incidents, and run change boards for configuration data. Work with Commercial and Finance on group and regional commercial data models. Build or review models and underlying code; guide code reviews and QA for BI outputs in Power BI to ensure outputs inform executive decision-making and client strategy. Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership; document methods and decisions for re-use so insights flow consistently into strategic decision-making. Coach the team; manage vendor and data-provider relationships; ensure GDPR-compliant, privacy-safe data use. Experience 8–12 years across data strategy, engineering/BI, and advanced analytics; media/OOH or adjacent AdTech/MarTech preferred. Leadership : proven record building small, high-impact teams; setting standards for data quality, lineage, and documentation. Technical : strong SQL; Python (or similar) for modelling; cloud data stack (Azure/AWS); modern ELT (e.g., dbt); warehouse/Lakehouse (BigQuery / Databricks); excellent Power BI. Domain : commercial analytics (revenue/cost/margin), audience/POI usage for OOH planning and measurement; data privacy and DPIA awareness. Communication : concise, executive-ready storytelling; able to brief Finance, Planning, and client leadership; rigorous documentation. As Head of Data, you’ll sit at the intersection of engineering, BI, and analytics, owning the data layer that enables our tech stack and ensuring it remains trusted, documented, and fit for growth.
