Principal Systems Integration Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness (On-site with relocation support)
Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 depending on experience, plus bonus and benefits
A key player in the UK defence sector is expanding its submarine integration teams and seeks an experienced Principal Systems Integration Engineer to drive test, maturation and fault resolution on advanced naval platforms. This role offers hands-on impact on national security assets, maturing critical systems from build to commissioning in a high-stakes, collaborative environment.
The role
As a Principal Systems Integration Engineer, you’ll lead the maturation of external communications subsystems on submarines, ensuring seamless integration through test, trials and handover. Coordinating with subcontractors, ops teams and specialists, you’ll resolve defects and define architectures to meet performance specs across the full lifecycle.
What you’ll be doing:
* Maturing external comms subsystems from build to test, leading trial events on submarines.
* Managing subcontractor site visits (security, H&S, access) and coordinating install/test activities.
* Investigating defects/non-conformities in electrical/electronic installs, driving to resolution.
* Providing SME input on systems architecture, interfaces and data for comms development.
* Supporting contractual requirements, acceptance criteria and commissioning handover to ship staff.
What we are looking for:
* Proven field/construction engineering in test & commissioning, including trial events on ships/submarines.
* Domain expertise in communications systems with electrical/electronic fault-finding experience.
* Experience defining system architectures/components/interfaces in defence environments.
* UK military airworthiness regs knowledge (e.g., DS00-970 equivalents for naval) a plus; HNC/HND/degree advantageous.
* Strong coordination skills for multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.
* SC/DV clearance eligible (5-10 years UK residency); ex-submariner boat time highly valued but not essential.
