Overview

We are looking for an experienced Healthcare Support Worker to join our Infection Prevention & Control Team. The IP&C team provides advice and teaching about the prevention and management of infection to all trust staff, and works closely with staff to advise where and how people with specific infections should be cared for.

The main responsibility of the Healthcare Support Worker role is to support the Trust-wide IP&C Service in the delivery of education, surveillance and auditing including data collection and initial reporting of concerns when identified. In addition, the HCSW is part of the direct care team who supports practitioners to meet patient needs and is responsible for providing care and therapy to patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse or appropriate team leader. The role will evolve with ongoing development of skills, knowledge and competencies within the clinical nursing team.


Main duties

* Undertake or participate in clinical audit/surveillance/for specific projects as agreed with the IP&C Team.
* Assist with the development of the surveillance programme, including data collection linked to specific infections and liaison with the team data analyst and clinical nurse specialists. Collect data and assist in report formation according to project protocols.
* Provide support during outbreak management of infections.
* Liaise with staff in clinical areas where surveillance and audit are carried out.
* Visit wards and departments within the Trust to audit and support evaluation of infection prevention and control measures.
* Assist in the development of the IP&C Trust-wide audit plan. Provide written and oral feedback to multidisciplinary clinical teams.
* Support in raising the profile and importance of infection prevention and control at ward level with IP&C specialist nurses.
* Work collaboratively with the clinical site management team in promoting IP&C.


Person specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

* Essential criteria: Completion of Level 3 NVQ/ QCF in Health & Social Care or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months).
* GCSE A*-C in English Language and Mathematics or equivalent (e.g., Certificates in Adult Literacy and Numeracy at Level 2).

Work Experience

* Experience of working in the NHS or other patient-focused environment, and to have worked as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Prior experience as a support worker.
* Ability to work as a member of a team and good time management skills.
* Understands and is committed to a caring approach to patients and relatives.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

* Effective and appropriate written and verbal communication skills.
* IT skills including basic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately.
* Awareness of healthcare policies and procedures.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard.
