The Whittle Laboratory is part of the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University. The Laboratory undertakes world-leading experimental and computational aerodynamic research and works with international manufacturers of turbomachinery. The new National Centre for Propulsion and Power (NCPP) will accompany the new laboratory building opening in October and will focus on climate-related research and zero-emission technologies.
Based in the Whittle Laboratory, you will be a member of the Engineering Department’s Information and Computing Services (ICS) group, which provides IT and AV services that underpin teaching, research and administration. ICS comprises approximately 30 IT professionals working in teams focused on user support, infrastructure, AV, research support and DevOps.
Responsibilities
* Lead IT support within the Whittle Laboratory, including the NCPP.
* Work closely with academics, providing support for teaching, research and administration.
* Involve yourself at all levels in the support and development of the IT infrastructure associated with the Laboratory’s activities.
* Liaise with organisations for which the Laboratory is undertaking research.
* Specify standard and specialist computer hardware; integrate hardware with experimental research equipment.
* Plan and implement IT projects; maintain network and data security; advise research staff on computational platforms and data storage facilities.
* Demonstrate skills in: providing IT services in an academic environment; network and data security (e.g., ISO/IEC 27000); source control and secure code management; front-line, customer-facing IT support; troubleshooting PC and server hardware and software; Microsoft Windows (10, 11) and Office; Microsoft Server (2019), Active Directory and GPOs; Linux system management (Rocky, Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi); computer deployment tools (Windows and Linux); networking (DNS, DHCP, Cisco).
* Familiarity with Python, AWS and WordPress is advantageous.
* Collaborate with ICS’s Divisional Support team, Department-wide Support and Infrastructure teams, and network specialists to meet NCPP security requirements.
* Work independently and as part of a team; manage workload with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level or have an equivalent level of experience.
* Ability to work on-site at the Laboratory.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; proactive and collaborative team member.
