The Role
As a SecOps Automation Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain automation capabilities within Security Operations to improve the detection, response, and remediation of security incidents. You will build scalable, reliable automation across SIEM, SOAR, and related security tooling, reducing manual effort while improving speed, consistency, and auditability of response.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as a subject matter expert for automation within Security Operations.
* Provide technical direction for automation solutions across SOC tooling, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
* Review and approve automation designs, code, and playbooks, enforcing secure coding and operational standards.
* Mentor SOC analysts and junior engineers in automation, scripting, and secure development practices.
* Design, develop, and maintain automation workflows supporting incident detection, investigation, response, and remediation.
* Lead implementation and optimisation of SOAR capabilities integrated with SIEM, EDR, IAM, cloud security, and third-party tools.
* Ensure automation supports both human in the loop and fully automated use cases aligned to governance and risk tolerance.
* Develop high-quality automation using scripting and programming languages such as Python and PowerShell, APIs, and SDKs.
* Apply software engineering best practices including version control, testing, CI/CD, documentation, and peer review.
* Build resilient automation that handles errors, edge cases, and platform limitations effectively.
* Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and integration patterns.
* Collaborate with platform, cloud, identity, and infrastructure teams to ensure secure integrations.
* Evaluate new tools and technologies to enhance SOC automation and effectiveness.
* Identify automation opportunities based on incident trends and operational pain points.
* Measure and improve automation outcomes using metrics such as MTTR reduction and analyst effort saved.
* Act as a key technical stakeholder, translating operational needs into secure, resilient automation solutions.
* Contribute to the long-term roadmap and maturity of Security Operations automation.
Your Profile
Essential skills / knowledge / experience
* Strong experience in security engineering, DevSecOps, or SOC engineering roles.
* Good understanding of data structures, APIs, JSON, and data parsing/normalisation.
* Experience designing robust integrations using REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth2/JWT, and SDKs.
* Experience working with security automation or SOAR platforms.
* Endtoend integration experience across SIEM, EDR/XDR, IAM, email, proxy/DNS, cloud security, and ITSM tools (ServiceNow, Jira).
* Experience leading code reviews, setting engineering standards, and owning CI/CD pipelines for SecOps artefacts.
* Experience in process mapping or operational assessments.
* Proven delivery of productiongrade playbooks covering detection, triage, containment, and recovery.
* Track record of reducing MTTR, eliminating operational toil, and improving signaltonoise through automation.
* Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
