Job Summary

The Research Student supports the execution of research protocols mostly focused on the physiological traits of obstructive sleep apnea. All responsibilities of the Undergraduate Co-op Research Assistant are carried out under the specific direction and supervision of the Project Manager and CITs. Duties include (but are not limited to): screening/recruiting research subjects, setting up instruments and equipment for overnight research studies, setting up research subjects for polysomnographic (PSG) recordings, help with recruiting research subjects, as well as all other duties assigned. The qualified candidate will receive training in PSG setup, troubleshooting, and scoring.

1.Assists with major experimental protocols involving the setup of research participants, monitoring of recording equipment, and management of experimental conditions (preparing the lab for a study and cleanup).
2.Prepares and applies electrodes for sleep polysomnographic recordings according to standard procedures.
3.Assists in collecting data. Monitors data collection equipment, including subject testing computers and PSG collection systems.
4.Troubleshoots technical problems that occur throughout the study.
5.Follows universal/standard precautions and maintains clean and safe work and subject areas, reports unsafe work areas to appropriate personnel.
6.Maintains the safety and well being of the experimental subjects at all times.
7.Assists with the recruitment of research subjects by contacting prospective volunteers in response to completed study interest forms.
8.Demonstrates professionalism and respect for subject rights and individual needs.
9.Screens subjects with a phone interview, explaining the research study and determining volunteer eligibility status.
10.Documents patient demographic information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
11.Prepares eligible subjects for research consent meeting and provides eligibility results to study project managers.
12.Collaborates with other CCI staff members to more effectively organize work to get all research events completed as scheduled.
13.Assists with the recruitment of research subjects using medical databases.
14.Screens subjects with a phone interview.
15.Performs all other laboratory duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Must be enrolled in a undergrad program.

High level of technical knowledge, communication and reasoning skills. Able to function appropriately and with limited supervision under sometimes stressful conditions. Initiative and sound judgment are displayed in unexpected situations. Good interpersonal skills, able to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and to work cooperatively with peers, able to perform his/her role in a team effort. Physically able to assist with the moving of testing equipment. Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently. Ability to follow directions carefully, and once trained, to work with a minimum of direct supervision. Accepts additional work when required Must possess the ability to continually learn new technical skills and update existing skills.
