Volunteer with Making it Out to support participants with their wider needs, helping them move towards greater independence.
What difference will you make?
Volunteers will have two direct impacts at MIO. The most tangible benefit will be to the lives of participants, as even small improvements can significantly impact their conditions. This could be through accessing funding or providing peace of mind that their problems are being addressed. The second benefit is to the organisation, which will benefit from increased capacity and staff who can dedicate more time to funding applications, service delivery, and growth.
What are we looking for?
This role requires someone with at least three years of experience supporting adults with vulnerabilities, such as in social work, counselling, or teaching. This experience is essential due to the systemic and complex issues faced by our participants. An understanding of these issues and how to help navigate them is crucial. Many support needs are related to 'life admin,' which, despite sounding simple, can be complicated by participants' histories and current situations. Advocacy skills, such as supporting participants during calls, are also important. Experience working with probation, prisons, the homeless sector, or addiction services is valuable. We seek individuals with a non-judgemental approach, a sense of humour, excellent listening skills, and a genuine desire to support our participants.
What will you be doing?
Alongside our practical and artistic projects, we support participants in navigating complex situations, including:
1. Providing advice on accessing benefits, housing, and applications such as Universal Credit, housing benefit, and PIP.
2. Liaising with local authorities about council tax reductions.
3. Applying for household grants, referring to food banks, and liaising with debt agencies like Step Change.
4. Assisting with utility bill payment plans and immigration enquiries.
This is a flexible, part-time role based mainly at our Church Road, Portslade location, approximately one day a week, with shorter or split sessions possible.
What we’re looking for
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience supporting vulnerable populations, with qualities including a non-judgemental approach, sense of humour, good listening skills, and a strong desire to support others.
What you’ll gain
Joining a motivated, supportive team; using your passion to improve mental health and wellbeing; developing counselling skills; and receiving training in safeguarding and related areas.
