London Assembly and secretariat

The London Assembly scrutinises the Mayor's activities by questioning the Mayor about their decisions. The Assembly also investigates issues of importance to London.

There are 25 Assembly Members, elected every four years at the same time as the Mayor. The Secretariat works for the Assembly to support its activities. TheCommunications Team support service to promote the work of the Assembly through press office, social media, publicity and events.


About the team

The GLA is looking to recruit a Senior Committee Officer to provide support to key London Assembly meetings - principally Police and Crime Committee meetings – as well as other meetings.

You will play a key role in local democracy, dealing with senior politicians and GLA stakeholders in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. You will often read about work you’ve led on in the media on your way home.


About the role

The role requires management of high volume and high complexity meetings at the London Assembly, so requires a candidate who can work at pace and be able to directly advise elected members, senior officers and stakeholders with confidence and autonomy.


What your day will look like

* Liaising with the Assembly Members, the Met Police and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime to manage meetings of the Assembly Police and Crime Committee and answer queries
* Advising on governance and procedural queries
* Updating governance documents
* Providing support to formal Assembly meetings


Skills, knowledge and experience

* To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:
* Proven track record of success in managing formal committee meetings involving the decision-making processes in a high-profile and/or political organisation.
* Evidence of ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation.
* Awareness of current affairs.
This is a politically restricted role under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.

Assessment process

Benefits

GLA staff are hybrid working up to 3 days a week in our offices and remotely depending on their role. As part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
