Job overview

We are looking for Band 6 Nurses to join our PICU unit, which is one of the largest in the UK and part of the leading centre for paediatric intensive care in North Thames and a recognised centre for training in paediatric intensive care medicine. Our Paediatric intensive care unit is one of the largest for children in the UK and Europe and offers intensive treatment and support for all specialties including oncology, neurology, metabolic medicine renal medicine, ENT, endocrinology, and respiratory medicine.

For the senior staff nurse role, we welcome applications from nurses with experience within the speciality and a recognised ITU qualification. You would be required to take a senior role within the management of the care of critically ill children, supporting staff through teaching and mentorship and liaising with the MDT.

There will be opportunities to join the clinical emergency team responding to emergency calls within the trust and to train to care for patients on hemofiltration. You will also enhance your managerial skills training to take charge of clinical shifts of 17 patients. There will also be an opportunity to train as a critical care transport nurse and rotate to work shifts with the Children's Acute Transport Service.

We run a Band 6 development pathway incorporating leadership skills and collaboration with colleagues. You will be supported by the practice education team and be working alongside clinical and medical experts from across the world.


Main duties of the job

* To provide clinical leadership to a designated nursing team and ensure the provision of high quality nursing care to children and families.
* To act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner
* To assist in the safe, effective and efficient management of the department within allocated
resources
* To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice
* To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Ward Manager
* To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion In Practice (NHS Commissioning Board Dec 2012).
* Contribute towards achieving the ‘Great Ormond Street Hospital Vision for Nursing’ (Jan 2013).

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

* NMC Registered Nurse (appropriate to clinical speciality)
* Intensive Care Qualification
* Evidence of ongoing professional development relating to clinical speciality


Desirable criteria

* Assessor or practice supervisor qualification/experience


Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children or specialised transferable skills
* Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing
* Understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based practice
* Basic knowledge of computer skills
* Understating or evidence of fulfilling requirements for Revalidation
* Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures
* Understanding of principles of clinical governance ( risk management, audit, quality)
* Previous experience in the relevant specialty of post (preferably in an NHS setting)

* Understanding of nursing practice and innovation outside of GOSH
* Knowledge of clinical incidents and complaints and reporting
