Overview

Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship – St John Wall, St Patrick and St Edmund’s Catholic schools in Birmingham. We are seeking an enthusiastic IT Solutions Technician Apprentice to join our team and support our vibrant Catholic schools: Saint John Wall Catholic Secondary School and St Patrick and St Edmund’s Catholic Primary School. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience across both primary and secondary educational settings within a diverse, multicultural, and faith-led community.

Saint John Wall is a dynamic secondary school committed to preparing young people for life through faith and learning. St Patrick and St Edmund’s is a two-form entry Catholic primary school, located on a split site in the heart of Birmingham, serving the Ladywood/Winson Green area. Both schools share a commitment to high-quality education grounded in Catholic values and a strong sense of community.


Apprenticeship Summary

* Salary: £7.55 an hour
* Working Week: Monday to Friday 8am – 3:48pm
* Hours: 39 hours per week
* Online apprenticeship training supported by our skilled tutors
* Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship standard qualification
* Location: St John Wall, Oxhill Road, Birmingham, B21 8HH; St Patrick and St Edmund’s Infant & Nursery Site, Rosebery Street, Birmingham, B18 7PA; St Patrick and St Edmund’s Junior Site, Dudley Road, Birmingham, B18 7QW


The Role

Your role will be to help maintain the IT support provision across both schools. You will be required to ensure access to internet connections and to the school’s network are always available. To maintain the security of the network, monitor access against improper use, and ensure measures are in place for the regular backup of data. To support staff and student users in using IT equipment and to respond to IT helpdesk requests.


Main Duties

The IT Technician plays a vital role in supporting and maintaining the school’s IT infrastructure, ensuring reliable network connectivity, robust cybersecurity, and responsive technical support. This role is key to maintaining a secure, efficient, and user-friendly digital environment for both staff and students. The IT Technician is also expected to actively support the Catholic ethos of the school and safeguard the welfare of pupils.


Key Responsibilities

* Provide first-line support for IT issues and service requests through the central helpdesk.
* Install, configure, and maintain hardware, software, and network systems.
* Troubleshoot technical problems to minimise downtime and ensure operational continuity.
* Ensure stable and secure network and internet connectivity across the school.
* Manage user accounts and permissions across school systems and networks.
* Support cybersecurity initiatives and ensure compliance with GDPR and data protection regulations.
* Assist staff and students with IT-related queries, providing guidance and basic training where necessary.
* Participate in IT projects, including system upgrades and technology rollouts.


The Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a tech-savvy problem-solver with a genuine passion for IT support and a proactive, customer-focused mindset. They will demonstrate strong technical skills alongside excellent interpersonal abilities.


Essential Skills and Experience

* Proven experience in IT support, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues.
* Familiarity with Microsoft 365, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and other online services.
* Experience with installing, upgrading, and maintaining software and operating systems.
* Knowledge of building, maintaining, and upgrading PC hardware.
* Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
* Ability to communicate clearly and relate well to students, staff, and external contacts.
* Self-awareness in identifying training and development needs, with a commitment to continuous learning.
* A professional, reliable, and well-presented approach to all aspects of work.
* A respectful and inclusive attitude, with a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
* Calm, helpful, and organised under pressure, with a flexible and positive approach to work.


Desirable

* Full UK driving licence (useful for multi-site support but not essential).
* Willingness and flexibility to occasionally support school events outside of normal working hours (e.g. parents' evenings, performances).


Training and Development

As an apprentice, you will receive support through both on-the-job learning and formal training as part of your apprenticeship programme. This will typically include:

* Study towards a relevant qualification, IT Solutions Technician Diploma.
* On-the-job training and mentoring from experienced professionals.
* Regular review meetings to track progress and development.
