Main Purpose of Job
To provide outstanding technical animal welfare support to the curriculum team in the delivery and recording of practical work. This is an exciting role, which combines both the practical care of the animals within the Animal Collection and the delivery of practical teaching, learning and assessment.
Main duties and responsibilities:
· Plan and deliver practical teaching sessions to support curriculum and develop industry skillsets.
· Support the day-to-day running of the Animal Collection as directed by the head of school/pal/senior technician and directly supervise student groups during the practical learning experience, supporting safe practice and the development of professional standards for an outstanding student experience across the College
· To have a sound understanding of the biology of the species held in collection
· To be involved in feed preparation
· To be proactively responsible for all aspects of the care and management of the College Animal Collection including but not limited to cleaning out; feeding; waste disposal and maintenance of enclosures
· Provide a high standard of animal care through daily husbandry tasks and the maintenance and presentation of facilities
· To observe animals, evaluating behaviour to determine any wellbeing issues
· To monitor feeding habits and report any changes
· To keep animal stocks lists up to date
· To check that animals are secure, and enclosures are fit for purpose
· To support the head of school/pal/senior technician in decisions regarding the health and wellbeing of the animals and the necessary contact with the veterinary surgeon.
· Support the teaching staff within Animal Management practical lessons and offer support to learners where necessary
· Support/assess during practical lessons and assist with work experience
· Support learners with Special Education needs
Working hours:
· Hours are 10 per week and include weekends
· Take a flexible approach to cover senior technician annual leave during the academic year
· This role also involves covering annual leave, weekend, and bank holiday working on a rota basis.

Education and Qualifications
* Level 2 maths and English qualification at grade C or above
* Qualified to at least level 3 in an animal or biological science related subject
* To possess a First Aid Certificate or be prepared to undertake the training and qualification
* To be or willing to be a member of an appropriate professional organisation
· Evidence of continuing professional development
Knowledge and skills
* Demonstrate a high standard of animal management
* Be able to handle a wide range of animals effectively
* Strong verbal and written communication skills
* Experience of working with young people
* To build and maintain links with outside organisations and Animal Keepers
* Strong IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
* Appropriate skill to enable the construction, repair, and maintenance of the various animal holdings within the ARC
* Knowledge of safeguarding issues
* Knowledge of equality and diversity issues
Experience
* Have a sound practical experience of working with a wide range of animals in a commercial or educational setting
Personal competencies and qualities
* A genuine interest in pursuing a career in animal care and enthusiasm to develop in this area
* Ability to give attention to detail
* Ability to work in a methodical, ordered manner
* Ability to develop and follow process in a timely manner
* To keep abreast of recent developments in animal management

* Must have full driving license

* Post is permanent - Salary £28,347 - £29,970 pro rata per annum (Actual Salary is £7,661 - £8,100)
* The post holder will undertake all duties and responsibilities in compliance with regulatory, legislative and college procedural requirements
