TEACHER OF CHEMISTRY

ST ALOYSIUS’ COLLEGE: THE SCHOOL

St Aloysius’ College is unique. As Scotland’s only Jesuit school, we occupy a unique position at the very heart of the city of Glasgow. Out campus, located adjacent to the Glasgow School of Art and close to the Royal Conservatoire, places the College firmly within the cultural and intellectual life of the city. The College’s iconic green blazer is a familiar and enduring presence, synonymous with both the school and the city itself.

We are proud to be one of the most socially diverse independent schools in Glasgow, educating young people from ages 3 to 18 across Junior and Senior Schools. The College has a proud tradition of academic excellence, with results that consistently place us among the highest performing schools in Scotland. Demand for places remains strong, particularly at key entry points.

Our Campus reflects both our heritage and our ambition. It includes the historic, listed Hanson Building, the award winning Clavius Science Centre and an £8 million sports complex at the very heart of our site.

While deeply rooted in tradition, St Aloysius’ College is forward looking in its mission. Guided by the Jesuit ideal of forming ‘women and men for others,’ we are committed to developing young people of intellect, compassion and integrity for generations to come. As a member of HMC and part of a global Jesuit network educating over 2.5 million students, the College offers exceptional opportunities for professional collaboration, development and international engagement.

St Aloysius’ College is proudly Jesuit and Catholic, and equally proud of the diversity of its community. We warmly welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds who share our commitment to educational excellence and the formation of young people in service of others.

CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is an exceptional department within the College, consistently achieving outstanding results and proving popular with students and parents throughout. Uptake is strong at all levels through to Advanced Higher. As part of the wider science provision in the school, there are currently eight teachers and two technicians all housed in nine well-resourced and modern labs within our Clavius building.

TEACHER OF CHEMISTRY fixed term, part time post from August (0.5 FTE until June )

The successful candidate for this post will be confident teaching Chemistry at all levels up to and including Higher. The three sciences are taught discretely in S1 and S2, so experience teaching the other sciences at this level is highly desired. Similarly, being able to teach Biology at certificate level would help with flexibility.

The department is dynamic, innovative and progressive, fostering an atmosphere of achievement, enjoyment and success. The department prides itself on achieving outstanding results in SQA examinations, but equally important is fostering an enthusiasm for science with our youngest students.

Staff are encouraged to develop lessons that will inspire and motivate pupils to reach their full potential. We would look to the successful candidate to pursue a variety of pedagogical approaches in class and develop resources to support lessons and courses. St Aloysius’ College also encourages staff to take advantage of continuous life-long professional learning opportunities to update their skills and improve their knowledge.

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS

Applications should be received not later than 9am on Tuesday 5 May. Applications received after this date will not be considered. CVs are not accepted.

Interviews will take place during the week of Monday 18 May .

You should nominate two referees to support your application (please note referees will be asked to assess you against the person specification attached rather than being generic in nature).

St Aloysius’ College places safeguarding of its pupils as its highest priority. As such references will be taken up before interviews and the successful applicant will be subject to appropriate qualification checks and advanced PVG clearance. Appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment questions will form part of the selection process.
