Job Overview
This role is for an Estimator based in Nottinghamshire at a well‑established precision engineering and manufacturing business. Candidates should have a strong CNC machining background and either current experience in estimating or aim to transition from the shop floor to an office‑based technical role.
Location: Nottinghamshire
Salary: £27,000 – £45,000 per annum (DOE)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:45am – 3:30pm
Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models and technical specifications.
- Prepare accurate cost estimates and detailed quotations.
- Calculate machining times, material costs, tooling, fabrication time and subcontract processes.
- Liaise with CNC, fabrication, quality and planning teams to validate production times.
- Source material and subcontract pricing from suppliers.
- Maintain and update pricing models for repeat and new work.
- Identify cost‑saving and value‑engineering opportunities.
- Support tender submissions and respond to customer enquiries.
- Maintain accurate quote, margin, and conversion records.
- Provide technical input during customer meetings, audits and project reviews.
- Ensure all quotations meet business standards for accuracy, profitability and lead time.
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- Background in precision engineering or CNC machining.
- Proven experience as a CNC Miller.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances and machining principles.
- Confident using manual inspection equipment.
- High attention to detail and strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to manage workload independently.
Desirable:
- CNC program editing or writing experience.
- 3‑axis or 4‑axis machining experience.
- NVQ Level 3 or completed apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering / Machining.
