Our Shift Signaller Managers manage the operation of the Signalling Centre and Signalling Staff on a shift basis, maintaining that all operating standards and procedures are adhered to. They also manage the operation of train services to deliver the highest standards of safety and train performance.

What is Signalling?
Signalling is how we keep thousands of trains moving safely across our railway. By operating a sophisticated traffic light system and other specialist equipment, our Signallers control the movement of trains across the network. Without signalling, our railway wouldn’t function.
What does it involve?
Managing a team of Signallers, you’ll be responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of Signallers to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of trains across the network. You’ll oversee the operation of complex signalling systems, ensuring that all train movements are managed in full compliance with Network Rail regulations and safety standards. This includes providing clear guidance on incident handling, liaising with several key stakeholders and managing regular alterations and information flow between parties. Whilst doing these duties, amongst others, you will be taking a proactive role in maintaining the highest standards of performance and safety.
You’ll act as a central point of communication, providing timely updates and advice to Network Rail colleagues, contractors, and drivers on train service information, operational changes, and incidents. A key part of your role will involve ensuring that all procedures are followed correctly before, during, and after engineering work—maintaining safe working practices, protecting staff on site, and supporting the effective coordination of engineering and train operations.
In addition, you’ll be responsible for monitoring performance within the Signalling Centre, maintaining detailed records of incidents and unusual occurrences, and conducting investigations where required. This includes interviewing Signallers, compiling written reports, and working closely with the local operations managers. You’ll support the Local Operations Manager in staff development, and address performance or disciplinary matters where appropriate.
You’ll also help ensure that the Signalling Centre operates smoothly day-to-day—out-of-hours rostering, responding to emergencies, working closely with route control, and initiating post‑incident drug and alcohol screening processes. When required, you may also operate signalling panels yourself (subject to competency). Maintaining site security, acting as Fire Warden, and ensuring compliance with all Network Rail safety and operational standards are also key aspects of this role.
Is it right for you?
We’re looking for someone with clear communication skills, both written and verbal. You should be confident handling emergency situations calmly and effectively, and be willing to complete full training not only as a Signaller but also developing further into the Signalling shift management position. Previous experience in a fast‑paced or high‑pressure operational environment is highly valued, as this role often requires quick thinking, sound judgement, and the ability to stay focused under pressure.
The successful candidate will have a professional approach, focused on safety, performance, and continuous improvement, with strong interpersonal skills and the flexibility to work across different locations. Experience of managing large teams, making time‑sensitive decisions, and handling operational incidents will be a real advantage, helping you succeed in this demanding but rewarding environment.
It would be an advantage if you have basic IT skills, a full UK driving licence, and any formal management or safety qualifications such as an HND in Management Studies, a NEBOSH Certificate, or an Audit qualification.
Part of the training will involve passing signalling school which involves 11 weeks of intense residential training and further local training once in role.
