Summary:
The NCC is a not-for-profit organisation supporting manufacturing innovation across 16 sectors in the UK.
We're looking for an Infrastructure Engineering specialist to join our expanding team as new member of the IT department providing guidance and hands on support around our IT Infrastructure. You'll work within a small, skilled & friendly team as our leading Infrastructure specialist, providing advice & guidance on a wide range of projects and BAU work.
Primarily working on IT projects & programmes across IT Defence Portfolio, you'll take responsibility for the installation and/or decommissioning of products and services. Responsible for delivering multiple IT platforms across both hybrid and on-premises environments. These platforms combine traditional virtualised infrastructure with cloud-based services.
This is a hands-on, delivery-oriented role requiring strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in complex, multi-platform environments. Supporting these platforms will also be part of the role.
Example of key responsibilities would include:
Working from established low-level designs, implements secure, resilient, and supportable infrastructure components that align with architectural standards and project timelines. Specifically:
* Builds and configures on-premises infrastructure
* Deploys and integrates cloud-based services (e.g. IaaS/PaaS/SaaS, virtual machines, storage, networking, identity).
* Ensures systems are built in line with approved high-level and low-level designs
* Collaborates with solution architects, programme and project managers, and cyber security engineers.Supports risk management with associated stakeholders.
* Undertakes the planning, estimation and scheduling of installation and decommissioning work.
* Ensures that the highest levels of IT security are maintained to protect the integrity of all NCC data.
* Within project delivery, uses normal operating facilities, diagnostic tools, technical manuals, test scripts and systems documentation to identify, diagnose and report on system errors.
* Supports the project manager with test planning by designing and producing test scripts & cases using own in-depth technical analysis of both functional and non-functional specifications.
* Provides specialist advice, guidance and assistance to colleagues on any aspect of installation planning and execution
* Takes a flexible approach to project working, including working from any NCC location and providing some out-of-hours work as required by the project.

* Willingness, and eligibility to undertake government security clearances.
* Proven experience of working in a senior or independent Infrastructure Engineer role.Supporting similar activities as above.
* Familiarity with implementing security best practices across Microsoft environments.
* Understanding of network security principles, including firewalls, segmentation, and secure remote access.
* Knowledge of identity and access management (IAM), including multi-factor authentication (MFA), RBAC, and conditional access policies.
* Experience aligning infrastructure builds with cyber security standards such as NCSC guidance, CIS benchmarks, or Microsoft Security Baselines.
* Awareness of common regulatory and compliance frameworks (e.g. ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus).
* Understanding of data classification, encryption standards (e.g. at rest and in transit), and secure storage/access principles.
* Experience supporting and configuring enterprise server platforms.
* Familiarity with virtualisation technologies used in production environments.
* Exposure to public cloud platforms and integration with on-premises systems.
* General knowledge of core networking components and protocols.
* Understanding of security practices within infrastructure delivery.
* Experience with systems management and configuration processes.
* Experience of the use of scripting to automate infrastructure tasks including infrastructure-as-code concepts.
* Awareness of telephony systems
