Offer description

We are seeking applications for a clinical teaching fellow who has completed Foundation Year 2 level to facilitate delivery of the Cardiology components of the 3rd and 4th year medical school programme. The successful candidate will receive training in undergraduate medical education, and will be able to undertake a fully funded Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Plymouth. A maximum of five sessions each week are allocated for undergraduate medical education. The appointee will spend the remaining time on personal education and furthering their clinical experience. The post is for 1 year and available from August 2023.

The post would be ideally suited to a trainee wishing to enhance their experience of cardiology prior to applying for either Internal Medicine Training (IMT) or Cardiology Higher Specialist Training.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will be expected to deliver a maximum of five sessions of undergraduate medical education each week. Outside of this, the appointee will spend the remaining time on personal education and furthering their clinical experience.

About us

The Cardiology Service within University Hospital Plymouth is located in the context of the South-West Cardiothoracic Centre (SWCC), which serves a secondary care population of 450,000 with a wider peninsula population of almost 2 million people across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.The SWCC is located in a new purpose built facility (Terence Lewis Building opened June 2007) with modern ward accommodation incorporating a spacious 8 bedded Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Cardiothoracic ITU/HDU facilities, the main cardiology and cardiothoracic wards, and a recently opened general ITU facility. The Unit also contains extensive office space for all consultants, as well as a new library & research facility.

The SWCC has excellent relationships with local cardiologists in other acute trusts and now provides virtually all adult cardiac surgery, with the exception of paediatrics and heart transplantation, for the South-West Peninsula (Devon and Cornwall), as well as a majority of the thoracic and upper gastrointestinal surgery.

The Cardiology Service currently has three fully equipped Phillips catheter laboratories, including one within in the recently opened Peninsula Heart Clinic.The Cardiology Outpatient Department is situated close to the catheter laboratories and contains a separate pacing laboratory for bradycardia pacing and offers full range of standard cardiology diagnostic investigations provided by a highly experienced team of cardiac physiologists.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with the Cardiology service to deliver high quality undergraduate education to Peninsula Medical School students based in University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

The main duties of the role will include:

* Acting as key clinical liaison for medical students during their cardiology clinical pathway placements.
* Coordinating and organising teaching for cardiology Pathway Weeks.
* Liaising with Clinical Teacher Leads and clinical teams to improve delivery of teaching.
* Demonstrating and teaching practical & clinical skills within both the clinical environment and simulated teaching scenarios
* Leading clinical teaching within clinical pathway weeks and developing local departmental teaching opportunities for students.
* Liaison with nurses, junior doctors, other health care providers, patients, relatives as well as senior medical staff within departments to support the successful facilitation of the BMBS programme within allocated departments.
* Undertaking formal teaching both face to face and using remote platforms, when required, within the academic day programme. This could include the delivery of tutorials, lectures, Clinical Skills and simulation sessions
* Attending ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as required to support the delivery of the medical education undergraduate teaching programme.
* Supporting quality assurance arrangements for clinical teaching within departments, as directed by the Pathway Leads / Hospital Sub Dean.
* Attending, when required, monthly Clinical Teacher Leads Meeting and other Medical School Working Groups.

The post holder will comply with all local policies including dress code. Annual and study leave will be in line with local trust policy. Other than in exceptional circumstances, leave will be taken only during medical student holidays. These duties and hours will be undertaken across Monday to Friday. Specific work patterns will be agreed with candidates following successful interview. The successful applicants will all be key members of the Undergraduate Medical Education Team and will take responsibility for supporting clinical learning within the clinical environment.

Successful post holders will have the option to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCert) or equivalent appropriate Postgraduate Certificate (e.g. Simulation and Patient Safety or Health Leadership and Management), which is funded up to a maximum of £3,500 by the Peninsula Medical School. Generally, this is undertaken via University of Plymouth but other providers would be considered (e.g. distance learning). There is also scope to take on further roles and duties within the Medical School by arrangement, if desired.

Doctors who are enthusiastic about working within Medical Education and delivering excellent teaching opportunities to students will be rewarded with a wide and rewarding medical educational and clinical teaching experience. Post holders will also be given an honorary title (honorary teaching fellow) from the University of Plymouth.

The post is available for 12 months, and is suitable for physicians with an interest in cardiology, who want to further their experience in of the speciality while also building an educational CV. There will also be opportunity for the postholder to contribute to departmental research projects.

The post would be ideally suited to a trainee wishing to enhance their experience of cardiology prior to applying for either Internal Medicine Training(IMT)or Cardiology Higher Specialist Training.

The postholder can chose to work on the cardiology rota if this would be desirable and subject to negotiation.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

* Full registration with the GMC or GDC, holding a licence to practice
* Certificate of completion of Foundation Training +/- further training.
* Minimum 2 full years NHS experience
* Experience of teaching in any setting

* Experience of online teaching / learning

* MBBS/MBChB or equivalent.
