Overview Of The Role

We are looking for a motivated, proactive Materials Engineer with deep knowledge of durability of concrete, corrosion of metals and/or coatings to join our Materials and Corrosion team. You will work with other Materials, Civil and Structural Engineers on technically demanding projects across sectors, including new and existing infrastructure and buildings (bridges, tunnels, water treatment and hydropower structures, jetties, etc.). You will address technical queries, prepare durability assessments including modelling and specifications, evaluate existing structures, and help develop remedial and maintenance strategies for managing risk and asset value (including cathodic protection) and providing advice on sustainable solutions and asset management. You will have opportunities to work with major asset owners in buildings, infrastructure, water and energy sectors, and also road and rail sectors.

You’ll manage your own work on a variety of projects, ensuring work is carried out to a high standard and in compliance with quality, environmental, and safety requirements. You will share knowledge across the team and develop knowledge from other disciplines when necessary, using your technical and problem‑solving abilities to undertake assessments and manage projects while maintaining professional relationships with clients and delivering high‑quality project deliverables.


Key Responsibilities And Duties Include

* Preparing durability assessments identifying deterioration mechanisms of structural elements and developing solutions to ensure the structure will achieve its design life
* Providing support to internal and external clients on selection, specification, performance, deterioration and repair of materials in structures
* Planning and carrying out investigations to evaluate current condition, performance and residual life of existing structures
* Root cause analyses and forensic engineering of deteriorating materials and structures
* Developing protection, maintenance and repair strategies, including cathodic protection
* Carrying out research into new materials and support for novel applications of materials and techniques
* Analysing data and producing reports and presentations that meet project requirements and manage client relationships
* Understanding, supporting and influencing clients, preparing/reviewing reports, and guiding publications
* Contributing to global projects, providing technical input and quality deliverables to British, European or International Standards
* Ensuring effective communication with project teams, clients and stakeholders, both verbally and in writing


Candidate Specification

As a professional in the construction industry, you will have a foundation in materials technology within civil engineering and an interest in growing technical and management skills. You should have experience writing technical reports to a high standard and presenting project material to colleagues and clients. You should be willing to take on new problems, adapt to new challenges, manage time effectively, and work on varied commissions with multiple stakeholders. Site work will be required, including confined spaces, tunnels, waterways, scaffolding, and potential travel with overnight stays. You may have experience managing projects with commercial awareness and the ability to interpret complex technical information for diverse audiences.

You will also demonstrate:

* Master’s degree in Engineering or Science (construction Materials or related), or equivalent; PhD or similar is beneficial
* Chartered status or working towards chartership (IEng or equivalent)
* Knowledge of civil engineering assets and materials (concrete, metals, masonry, coatings, etc.)
* Experience in inspection, investigation, monitoring and assessment of civil structures
* Willingness to travel nationally or internationally and to work non‑standard hours when necessary
* Strong problem‑solving, learning mindset, and ability to apply new knowledge to projects
