Archaeology Data Service, Department of Archaeology
The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. Based at the University of York, it collaborates with external partners in Higher Education, public, and commercial archaeological sectors. All archived data is openly accessible. ADS also manages the renowned Internet Archaeology journal. The team currently comprises around a dozen staff.
This position is suitable for early-career archaeologists, such as those in the commercial or public sector, or experienced archaeologists seeking to develop new skills. It is a fixed-term, three-year trainee role, primarily focusing on archiving digital outputs from major infrastructure projects like HS2. Secondments may be considered. The role aims to support career development in digital archiving or ICT skills application in current employment.
Role
You will perform routine administrative and IT tasks to support the Archaeology Data Service and assist Digital Archivists. Key responsibilities include:
* Digital archiving tasks such as accessioning, mounting, indexing data, validating data, and converting formats.
* Assisting with webpage preparation, production, and maintenance.
* Responding professionally to general inquiries and escalating complex issues.
* Participating in training activities, both formal and informal.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
You should have:
* At least 5 GCSE passes at Grade 4 (C) or above, including Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.
* Proficiency with standard office software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* The ability to work independently with appropriate guidance.
* Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to complete tasks on time and to standard.
