You will provide independent, one-to-one advocacy that ensures parents’ rights are respected, their voices are heard, and they are fully supported to understand and participate in decisions that affect their lives and families.
Working within a multi-agency framework, you will build trusted, user-led relationships that empower parents to explore their options, understand complex processes, and speak up for themselves, placing them at the heart of decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Working alongside the Senior Independent Advocacy Practitioner and Independent Wellbeing Officers, you will contribute to delivering the objectives and outcomes of the PAGE Project. Your duties will include:
* Advocating for parents with learning disabilities in a range of settings and meetings, including:
o Early Help processes
o Child in Need plans
o Child Protection plans and Section 47 enquiries
o Court proceedings
o Situations involving interim care orders
* Supporting parents to actively participate in planning and decision-making processes that affect their parenting and wider support needs.
* Working within an empowering, inclusive framework to ensure parents are heard, understood, and involved in decisions across all relevant settings.
* Supporting parents to express their views and wishes clearly, ensuring these are considered as part of informed decision-making.
* Conducting initial assessments, developing advocacy plans, and working towards agreed advocacy outcomes.
* Managing and maintaining an advocacy caseload, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant case records.
* Evaluating the impact of advocacy support using self-reporting, professional assessment, and validated tools.
* Raising awareness of the issues affecting parents with learning disabilities and promoting the PAGE Project across health, social care, and education settings.
* Working collaboratively with referral agencies and stakeholders to ensure accessible and responsive referral pathways.
* Producing monitoring reports, identifying key themes and trends to support service development.
* Keeping up to date with relevant legislation, policy, case law, and best practice.
* Participating fully in supervision, training, and professional development.
* Working in line with Sandwell Advocacy’s policies, including safeguarding adults, health and safety, and equal opportunities, and challenging discriminatory practice where necessary.
About You
You will be committed to equality, inclusion, and empowerment, with the ability to build trusting relationships and advocate confidently within complex systems. Experience of working with people with learning disabilities and/or within children’s or social care settings would be highly desirable.
