About the Role

The Senior Laboratory Technician will operate within the Laboratory team, primarily supporting the Mechanical Testing (Test House) area while also contributing to wider quality-related activities. This role is crucial in ensuring that all testing activities are completed safely, accurately, and in full compliance with technical procedures, NADCAP/ISO 17025 requirements, and internal customer expectations.

The post-holder will take ownership of Mechanical Testing operations, liaising closely with Metallurgists, Technicians, and the Laboratory Manager to coordinate workload, align priorities, and ensure that all testing is delivered to the highest standards. This is a hands-on, methodical role requiring strong organisational skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet tight deadlines.


All applicants must currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UK and be able to provide a 5 year UK history of living in the UK with a gap of no more than 28 days.


Successful candidates will undergo a Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment and can be subject to random testing throughout their employment.


As a condition of employment, successful candidates are required to fulfil a DBS clearance before commencing this role, to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance.


Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

* Take full responsibility for the Mechanical Testing area, ensuring all incoming work is logged, coordinated, and completed efficiently.
* Conduct and support mechanical testing activities in line with business priorities and technical requirements.
* Collaborate with Metallurgists and the Laboratory Manager to align on work orders, deadlines and critical priorities.
* Maintain high-quality documentation, test records, and reporting in accordance with Met Lab procedures.
* Follow all technical procedures with precision, ensuring methodical and compliant testing.
* Support regular quality functions, including special process audits.
* Assist with Round Robin and Proficiency Testing Programmes (PTP).
* Perform routine Test House duties such as LIMS data entry, stock control, and preventative maintenance checks.
* Provide support to the HSE department where required.
* Carry out additional laboratory or quality-related tasks as reasonably requested.

Safety Responsibilities

* Comply with all EHS and legislative requirements.
* Follow PPE and safety policies at all times.
* Promote safe working practices within the laboratory environment.
* Participate in risk assessments and support mitigation of “near miss” activity.

Quality Responsibilities

* Uphold the highest standard of testing quality and accuracy.
* Complete all tasks right first time, following procedures and technical standards.
* Support continuous improvement within laboratory processes and documentation.

Delivery Responsibilities

* Ensure all testing tasks are completed within required timeframes.
* Maintain a disciplined and organised workflow to meet internal and external expectations.

Cost Responsibilities

* Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality or service.
* Support efficiency improvements within the Test House.

People Responsibilities

* Maintain professional standards of communication with internal and external customers.
* Work collaboratively with colleagues across Quality, Engineering, and Operations.
* Adhere to all Mettis HR policies and procedures.

Business Responsibilities

* Act as an ambassador for the Mettis Group.
* Role model the company’s Vision, Mission and Values in all activities.


Qualifications

Essential / Desirable

* Experience in mechanical testing (advantageous but not essential—training can be provided).
* Experience working in a NADCAP or ISO 17025 accredited laboratory (desirable).
* Understanding of calibration processes for laboratory equipment.
* Knowledge of Uncertainty of Measurement budgets (advantageous).
* Strong accuracy and attention to detail.
* Able to use Microsoft Office applications proficiently.

* Ability to work unsupervised and manage own workload after training.
* Capable of working to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
