Overview

The North Wales School of Education offers a wide range of academic courses, including undergraduate and postgraduate ITE courses, part-time and full-time undergraduate BA and BSc programmes, a range of part-time and full time Masters courses (including the new National Masters in Education), full-time and part-time Education Doctorate courses (EdD, ProfDoc) full-time and part-time MRes and MPhil programmes and full-time and part-time PhD programme.

Our integrated vision matches closely to the national direction of travel in Wales on levels of both policy (Our National Mission) and education research (the National Strategy for Education Research and Enquiry). We are an ambitious and growing North Wales School of Education with a sustained history of excellence in teaching through the medium of Welsh and English going back to 1858.

Purpose of the Job

The role holder will join the education team in the North Wales School of Education. They will support delivery of core curriculum as well as delivering future developments and innovations to the programme, including advances in teaching and research excellence within education.

The purpose of the job includes:

1. To provide quality, engaging teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the field of Education.

2. To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of projects.

3. To strengthen the existing links between our education research activity and the local community and within our HEI-schools partnership.

4. To engage with Welsh Government and other organisations on issues relating to Education.

5. Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.

6. Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

7. To establish a record of teaching excellence at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

8. Planning, preparing and delivering lectures and tutorials at undergraduate and postgraduate level, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.

9. Delivery of quality modules that attract, engage and retain students, including designing, developing and delivering of a range of teaching materials for study at various levels.

10. Contributing to the teaching and assessment of the School’s portfolio of modules and programmes at various levels according to the needs of the School.

11. Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work within agreed time constraints.

12. Keeping abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments.

13. Ensuring that all students are provided with a supportive learning environment and provide advice and guidance to individual students as their personal tutor.

14. Participating in Quality Enhancement procedures.

15. Supervise students during School Experience, integrating theory and practice.

16. Take a full role in the assessment of students, both academically and against the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.

17. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

18. Contribute to the development of new programmes and undertaking role of module coordinator or contributing to module co-ordination.

Administrative and Wider Contribution duties will include:

19. Participating in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).

20. To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School.

21. Contribute to the School's management, and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organisation of exams, contribute to accreditation/QA procedures (if module co-ordinator).

22. Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.

23. Maintaining accurate records and contributing to the working of the committee structures of the School and College.

24. Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting under graduate and postgraduate student experience).

Other Duties and Responsibilities

25. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

27. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.

28. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their post.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

29. Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area OR PhD or EdD or be close to the completion in a relevant subject area.
30. Qualified Teacher Status.

Desirable

31. PGCERT or HEA Fellowship.

Teaching Skills

Essential

32. Experience of teaching at higher education level and/or in the UK school sector with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.
33. Experience of module/curriculum development and delivery in higher education or school sector.
34. Awareness of current developments relating to education and teacher education and training.
35. Recent coaching/mentoring experience.
36. Awareness of issues relating to teaching in a bilingual environment.
37. Evidence of Continued Professional Development.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

38. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team and on own initiative.
39. Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines.
40. Excellent interpersonal skills.
41. Excellent verbal and written skills.
42. Commitment to pastoral care and the student experience.
43. Demonstrable computer skills and ability to use relevant learning resource software such as Blackboard.

Essential

44. The ability to communicate fluently, deliver lectures and assess students’ work in Welsh.
45. Ability to travel to Partnership locations and national events relating to work placements and to attend other professional activities.
