NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Gastroenterology

Join to apply for the NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Gastroenterology role at The University of Sheffield.

Overview

This NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in Gastroenterology has been awarded to The Medical School at The University of Sheffield as part of the prestigious UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/ Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post forms an integral part of the Gastroenterology clinical training programme led by Dr Sampath Kumar (Training Programme Director) and the Academic Training Lead is Professor David Sanders. The role offers 50% clinical and 50% academic time and is supported by an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire rotation in gastroenterology.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Training Programme
Almost all the Gastroenterology training is at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). You will join a team of 8 Gastroenterology Registrars from ST3 to ST7 at NGH, with further colleagues based at Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. Your clinical work will be in Sheffield with a 50% commitment, configurable to your training needs.

Relationship between Academic and Clinical Training
The post holds an NTN(A); clinical training is a required part of the post, conducted as part of the South Yorkshire gastroenterology training programme. A four‑month rotating modular system covers core and sub‑specialty requirements, with a strict 50:50 split between clinical training and research time.

Job Plan
You will work in blocks of either clinical training (specific modules) or research time. The academic job plan will be flexible and agreed with senior academic staff.

On‑call Rota
You will join the resident on‑call rota at a 50% SpR commitment during the programme, including during research blocks, based at NGH.

Audit
There is a bi‑monthly audit meeting to which you are expected to contribute periodically.

Administration
You will undertake administrative work in support of the Department of Infection & Immunity and the Academic Unit of Gastroenterology, without detracting from clinical or research duties.

Support
The post is supported by excellent research, clinical and academic office facilities and secretarial support.
