Teaching Assistant – Portsmouth
Prospero Teaching is recruiting a friendly, proactive Teaching Assistant to join welcoming schools in Portsmouth. This is role entails supporting pupils throughout the school day – from helping in the classroom to leading small‑group activities and providing 1:1 support when needed.
You’ll work alongside teachers to create a positive learning environment, help pupils stay engaged with their work, and provide additional guidance to children who benefit from a little extra support. Every day is different, making this role ideal for anyone who enjoys variety and meaningful interaction with young learners.
This position suits individuals with experience in schools, childcare, tutoring, youth work, mentoring, or graduates looking to gain valuable school‑based experience before teaching, educational psychology, or further study.
The Role:
1. Support teachers during lessons across multiple subjects
2. Provide 1:1 or small‑group support to pupils needing extra help
3. Assist with learning tasks, classroom activities, and routines
4. Encourage students’ confidence, independence, and positive behaviour
5. Prepare and organise learning resources as needed
6. Help maintain a calm, safe, and inclusive environment
7. Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCO, and support teams
Ideal Candidate:
8. Experience working with children (formal or informal)
9. Confident, patient, and enthusiastic about helping students succeed
10. Strong communication and teamwork skills
11. Comfortable working across different year groups
12. Positive, reliable, and motivated to support learning
13. Graduates in psychology, education, child development, or similar fields encouraged to apply
Contract Details:
14. Position: Teaching Assistant
15. Location: Portsmouth
16. Start: ASAP
17. Hours: Full‑time, term‑time
18. Pay: ££ per hour
19. Contract: Long‑term
Experience, Training & Safeguarding:
20. Previous experience with children desirable
21. Safeguarding training can be provided
22. Behaviour‑support experience helpful but not essential
Eligibility:
23. Right to work in the UK
24. Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)
25. Two suitable references
