Pathology Digital and Diagnostic Support Technician – Band 5. Full time, 37.5 hours per week (on call rotation may be required). Job ref 279-7224409-SEP25. Employer: University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Site: Worthing General Hospital, Worthing. Salary £31,049 - £37,796 per year.


Job overview

The post holder will assist the Pathology IT department in providing advice across all specialties in Pathology. Manage and develop existing and future electronic communications between diagnostic analytical equipment, their controller devices/servers (Diagnostic Equipment Systems (DES)) and the clinical systems they serve (e.g., Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Point of Care Testing (POCT) systems and Blood Tracking Systems). Manage and maintain the Quality Management Systems around Pathology IT to ensure safe, effective, professional practice in the department that meets regulatory and accreditation compliance for Laboratories, Transfusable blood and Point of Care Testing devices. This includes, as a minimum, ISO 15189 Clinical Laboratory Accreditation Standards and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005. Manage and develop the electronic “Lab to Lab” systems that facilitate referrals of patient samples for specialist testing both within and outside the Sussex Pathology Network.


Main duties of the job

Support with the IT administration of analytical platforms that underpin Pathology Service delivery. Your role includes maintenance, change management and evaluation of new analytical platforms. Advise and work with the Pathology IT Lead(s) to develop operational and strategic solutions for clinical analytical technologies to ensure operational continuity, manage cost, manage change and implement effective strategies for adopting new technology. Advise and work with the Pathology IT Lead and the Pathology Quality Manager to develop Pathology IT Quality systems aligned with wider departmental objectives. Ensure the proper operation of IT change control procedures, management of change and IT audit.

Qualifications

* Biomedical Science Degree (BSc) Computing/information technology degree or equivalent experience
* Health Professions Council


Experience

* Experience of working in a healthcare environment; strong scientific knowledge across pathology disciplines; understanding of work processes and the technical/scientific foundations of the work; practical laboratory experience; extensive IT knowledge to support lab work, analytical equipment and clinical needs; experience in a computer support role in a clinical laboratory environment; experience of clinical databases and their management; knowledge of commercial analytical equipment and their data interfaces; experience with NHS IT networks, security models and NHS data pathways; awareness of Caldicott Guidelines, Data Protection Act, MHRA regulations, and ISO 15189


Specific Requirements

* Advanced IT skills to plan, evaluate and administer the Laboratory Information System and various pathology IT systems; ability to use data analysis tools to interrogate clinical databases; respond to troubleshooting to maintain core lab functions; daily use of standard office software; strong skills with email, intranet/internet, remote access, and data security policies; ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines

* Direct responsibility for 1 or more junior staff (few individuals at most)
