Overview
This fixed term 6 month position (with potential to extend to a year) offers a pathway for those interested in pursuing a career in anaesthetics. The post will commence at the start of February in line with national rotations. The department supports sub-specialty interests and provides the full range of DGH anaesthesia including Orthopaedic, General Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, ENT and Oral Surgery lists.
The department is the recipient of Anaesthetic Clinical Service Accreditation (ACSA) from the Royal College of Anaesthetists and encourages participation in education, audit or quality improvement projects. The successful candidate would be encouraged and supported to pursue sub-specialty opportunities chosen in agreement with the department.
Responsibilities
* Join the registrar 1:8 emergency on-call rota with primary responsibility to cover the emergency theatre and support more junior CT2-3 colleagues covering obstetrics out-of-hours. The role requires the ability to provide anaesthetic cover to labour ward.
* Provide anaesthetic cover 24/7 for theatres, labour ward and ICU with 24/7 consultant support.
* Participate in education, audit or quality improvement projects as part of the fellowship.
* Contribute to departmental work within the multi-disciplinary team and support services across sites.

Objectives of the fellowship depend on the sub-speciality interest agreed with the department. Please refer to the attachment for more detail about the sub-specialties on offer.
Department and Facilities
Theatres provide elective, emergency and trauma surgery across multiple operating theatres with a throughput of approximately 26,000 cases per year. The department collaborates with ENT, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, General surgery and others to deliver high-quality surgical care. The department supports the latest technologies, including robotic surgery, with two state-of-the-art robotic systems used for urology, upper GI and colorectal surgeries.
The main site at RBH comprises 20 operating theatres across three complexes and a ring-fenced Elective Orthopaedic Unit. Additional sites include Prince Charles Eye Unit and West Berkshire Community Hospital with elective services in a self-contained day bed unit.

* Redlands Theatres – Ring fenced Orthopaedic Unit, 4 theatres

* Maternity Theatres – 3 theatres, 1 procedural room
* West Berkshire – 2 theatres and 1 procedural room (Prince Charles Eye Unit – 2 theatres, Ophthalmology specialty)
