Job Title: Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) Location: Birmingham, UK Project: Major Infrastructure Project Reports To: Project Manager / Construction Manager Rate: First 40 hours - £33.51 per hour // Over 40 hours - £41.58 per hour // £60.00 per day accommodation Job Role The Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) is responsible for the safe planning, execution, and supervision of all lifting activities on a major infrastructure project. This role ensures all lifting operations are carried out in compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, and project-specific requirements. Key Responsibilities Plan and oversee all lifting operations in accordance with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and BS 7121 standards. Produce detailed lifting plans, method statements, and risk assessments for complex and high-risk lifts. Ensure all lifting equipment is correctly specified, certified, and fit for purpose. Coordinate with site management, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure lifting operations are integrated safely into the construction programme. Appoint and manage Crane Supervisors, Slinger/Signallers, and lifting teams. Ensure all personnel involved in lifting operations are competent, trained, and appropriately certified (e.g., CPCS/NPORS). Conduct site inspections and audits of lifting activities to ensure compliance with safety standards. Monitor and manage lifting operations to minimise risk and prevent incidents. Review and approve subcontractor lifting plans where required. Maintain accurate records of lifting operations, equipment inspections, and certifications. Provide technical advice and guidance on lifting operations to project teams. Investigate incidents or near misses related to lifting activities and implement corrective actions. Health, Safety & Compliance Ensure all lifting operations comply with UK health and safety legislation, including LOLER and PUWER. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to site safety procedures. Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and project meetings. Stop any unsafe lifting operation immediately and implement corrective measures. Skills & Experience Required Proven experience as an Appointed Person on major infrastructure or construction projects. Strong knowledge of lifting operations, crane types, and associated equipment. Experience working on complex, large-scale projects (e.g., rail, highways, energy, or civil engineering). Excellent planning, organisational, and communication skills. Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering specifications. Strong leadership and decision-making capability under pressure. Qualifications & Certifications CPCS A61 Appointed Person (or NPORS equivalent). SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme). In-depth knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, and BS 7121. Relevant construction or engineering qualification (desirable).
