Working with the Senior Network Administrator and IT Security Officer within our client's Scientific Computing group, the post will be responsible for co-developing the design, development, commissioning, and operational support of their science-facing network infrastructure. This includes current facility operations and key roles in network upgrade and transformation projects. The job covers support, design, development, and operation of networking capabilities to ensure effective, dependable, and resilient operations of the client's accelerators, science beamlines, and data centre operations.
Responsibilities
* Co-design and develop Diamond's Science Network infrastructure to support high-performance detectors, storage systems, and cluster services.
* Provide network operations support and technical expertise within the Scientific Computing team for ad hoc and project work.
* Install and configure network infrastructure using hardware from multiple vendors.
* Undertake root cause analysis, identify, and resolve network infrastructure issues promptly, collaborating with other teams.
* Patch network equipment software to standard versions.
* Interface with internal teams and scientists throughout project development, requirements gathering, project tracking, and verification.
* Report progress regularly to the Operations Manager and Head of Scientific Computing.
* Plan, coordinate, and implement network-related projects.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of network technologies to support facility projects.
* Document and communicate network developments within Diamond and other projects.
* Monitor network performance and develop reporting metrics and dashboards.
* Manage junior network administrators as required.
* Maintain and update DLS firewall appliances.
Skills and Experience
* Proven experience administering modern network infrastructure.
* Experience configuring and troubleshooting protocols such as PXE, DHCP, DNS, CIFS, and NFS.
* Experience with high-bandwidth computer hardware.
* Experience tuning network stacks on Windows and/or Linux.
* Proficiency with Linux command line and scripting.
* Experience operating and configuring firewalls and VPNs.
* Experience developing network infrastructure, including fiber installs, routers, and switches.
* Knowledge of Low Latency Network Interconnects like InfiniBand or OmniPath.
* Degree in computing or science, or equivalent experience.
* Specific network certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or WCNA.
