Job Description
The Building & Technical Services Manager will be accountable for ensuring the physical premises, equipment, and technical services are set-up and maintained to a high standard, supporting an excellent student experience.
Key Accountabilities
1. Support the Campus Dean with the development and implementation of a Campus Estates Strategy, including delegated management of Opex and Capex projects.
2. Manage, develop, and deploy the Building and Technical Services team to maximize value to the Student Experience; this includes direct line management of the Senior Health and Safety Officer, Senior Building and Maintenance Officer, and Senior Technicians if appropriate.
3. Ensure that the building, rooms, and resources are set-up, maintained, operated appropriately, and in a safe manner.
4. Ensure and continually improve the accessibility of all aspects of buildings and technical services for all users; liaise with relevant departments to accommodate individual staff, student, and visitor accessibility needs.
5. Manage the operations of the Building and Technical Services team to reflect the needs of the University and the Campus community.
6. Oversee the opening, closing, and security of the building in line with procedures and protocols.
7. Manage health and safety compliance on campus, including staff training, routine testing, inspections, audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations. Be the local expert on Health and Safety matters, providing advice and support.
8. Ensure premises and technical resources are fit for purpose, well maintained, and well presented.
9. Manage planned preventative maintenance, repairs, and refurbishments for buildings and equipment.
10. Oversee external contractors' performance, including security, cleaning, and technical providers, ensuring cost-effective services.
11. Collaborate with campus colleagues to optimize room utilization.
12. Support the Information Hub with up-to-date information and assistance.
13. Coordinate technical support for external events and venues.
14. Maintain internal systems related to equipment management and health & safety records.
Person Specification
The postholder will be a confident, adaptable manager capable of handling a high and varied workload. They will understand the importance of the Building and Technical department in creating a positive environment for learning and working, and will be committed to delivering high-quality service.
Essential Criteria
* Experience managing physical premises and technical services within higher education.
* Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation; NEBOSH qualification preferred or willing to obtain.
* Experience managing a diverse team.
* Highly organized with the ability to prioritize effectively.
* Flexible, adaptable, and excellent interpersonal skills to engage stakeholders internally and externally.
* Competent IT user.
Desirable Criteria
* Degree or professional qualification in Leadership, Management, or Project Management.
* Experience using student records, timetabling, or health & safety software.
Desired Skills and Experience
Background in M&E managing technical services for a university campus, preferably in Brighton.
